A 300 MW laser seems a bit power to be owned by a random person to be honest :/.

Based on past experience, the first post in this thread is "EXACTLY" what a real request for help would read like.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this thread, after the suggestions for going to the ER right away, is a disgrace. If the OP really had a injury, you want followup and support from other laser users, not ridicule. Now we have NO clue if he/she really had a incident or if there was damage.

If there was some damage, the social stigma generated by some of the later posts might discourage a young person with low self esteem, from seeking treatment. It would certainly stop such a person from making a follow up post.


A broken pointer can emit copious IR, flash randomly, or in rare cases, self Q-Switch. This was a plausible incident.

Or per chance, some of you seem to prefer to think its best to brush such things under the rug, as a non-incident. This is not a good idea from the cultural, legal, educational, and safety stand points.

Shame on those of you who posted in that manner.

There are government and private facilities in the United States that study eye injuries, who could/would have placed a actual injury on a flight, at no charge, for followup and evaluation. Their diagnostic equipment is world class, and their long term advice to a injured person might make a world of difference. Sadly, the way things are, few doctors would even know of their existence.

Next time support the injured person, or say nothing.

I agree with Steve, 100%. The OP's account of how the accident happened is exactly what someone unfamiliar with the dangers of laser light might do, given an apparently inoperable device that looks like a flashlight.

Disable a flashlight, hand it to someone and watch what they do with it after finding it doesn't come on with the switch. They shake it, then look right into it to see if the bulb is coming on or not! THAT's the real danger of DPSS laser "pointers" in flashlight shaped housings. Hand a flashlight to a little child and watch what they do with it.
 
I second that..

EVERY report of eye injury should be treated as if it is 100% real. This way even if it's not, the proper information has been posted for future use perhaps by someone who is actually been injured. I can't even count how many times I've seen people post about how their greenie broke so they looked into the aperture and saw a dim harmless-looking red light. A few hundred mW or more of IR IS NOT HARMLESS!!

Uh even if the guy doesn't know about the IR danger it's STILL a highly stupid thing to do. What if the switch is just flaky and it comes on at full power in your eye? What if the batteries aren't making proper contact and when you tilt it the laser comes on? Even when I got my first 5mw green pointer and didn't know much of anything about lasers I wouldn't have dreamed of doing something like this. I mean at least point the laser at a wall to test and if you must look down the aperture take the batteries out.

This is literally like looking down a jammed gun while pulling the trigger. The only difference is that you could end up blind in one eye rather than dead.

None of this matters anyway because this is a blatant troll thread. I've done lots of trolling on other forums. Trust me when I say that I can pick it out.
 
What's the guy trolling for? Safety information? Trolls want drama and controversy. The drama here is only about whether he's a troll or not. Not very compelling drama. If he's a troll, and I don't think he is, he's a stupid one.

No, I think the derailment into whether he's a troll or not speaks more to the absence of compassion and frivolity of many here regarding this very serious topic, real or not.
 
You'll forgive me if I don't trust your troll radar Razako, but it's irrelevant really. No one's saying it wasn't stupid, but as an example what help is it to tell someome who just accidentally shot themselves with a gun that it was stupid? I'm thinking they already know that.

The bottom line is that we need to take safety seriously here. Posts that say nothing other than "you're a dumbass troll" aren't helpful in any way. There's no denying that. If that's all people have to say, then don't say anything. It's even easier not to say a word.

There's different kinds of trolls. Some do it for the drama and will keep posting back to get more replies and controversy built up. Others just make one incredibly shocking post to freak people out, piss them off and make them think thoughts about the sad state of humanity in general.

Oh come on. He looked in the end of the freaking thing while it was turned on. Even when I was five years old, I would have been intelligent enough not to do that...
 
There's no controversy to be expected by someone saying they just might've hurt their eye and want recommendations about what to do. The only drama in this thread deals with the derailment about the OP's intention. The topic was his injury.

If he was a troll of your second type trying to freak us out, is that a bad thing? He certainly chose a plausible scenario. I think he'd have gone more extreme if the goal was to freak us out. Instead, he chose a scenario that is a great example of a "dry run" for it to be discussed seriously here. Jumping on the troll hunt just derails that.
