Hence why a mechanical dump is so attractive. You won't get the high rep rate of a PC, but you should get detectable high peak pulses followed by a long dead time. Since it is impossible to instantaneously get a mirror into the beam path, or even get one mostly in place before the cavity has dumped, you won't get a full bore cross-section's output, but just a sliver, or crescent-moon at best. That's still something though.

I am curious though, how much of the bore cross section can be obscured before lasing ceases. I suppose you could test this right now, UK or Bloom. You've both got open cavities on hand.

I do not have a b-tube.

However, removing the core can still be problematic. You're removing the path the light will take to get to the side of the beam you are not touching. They are proportionate to one another. Symmetrical/mirrored.

As for the use of a 107/127/907. Yes, that was the planned tube to use. I almost bought Dave's (not Kaiser's) for that very reason. However, I did not want to kill a 127 doing 46.5mW. Though it's the best candidate for this. Incredible intracavity power, 2B tube, etc. it's the greatest option.

Ya, but even an extended cavity can be used to experiment and see how much cross section obstruction is tolerable, it is just harder to do because instead of lasing ceasing, you'd be watching the waste beam for sudden power fluctuations. Anyway, no worries.

Oh and I asked Dr. Sam about that sputtered 1B tube he has. He said it was likely due to interrupted cathode connection or reverse polarization so post-cleaning sputtering may not be an issue. When I have expendable money I may grab it if it is still available and give it a go. He liked my idea of capacitively coupled plasma erosion.

A little Christmas present a day early for you guys who've waited patiently. (and not so patiently)

Finally got around to salvaging the one 612nm mirror I have. Alas my poor LOR-161, you will not be forgotten. Your final gift to us before your replacement by a LOR-150...the use of your High Reflector to be allowed on my single brewster tube...

good luck finding this HeNe they are rare and if you can find one be prepared to cut off both arms and your legs to buy it

Sam has got a few single brewsters on his for-sale page. It is the mirrors that will be hard to find. As for price, good old Sam has some pretty good deals. :)

Sam's are similar, but not like mine. Mine is a broadband, low expansion hard seal tube, rated 60W+. Only a handful of 580s were ever produced to my knowledge, both red and green. I think most of sam's tubes are soft seal REO tubes. Though I think he has a few newer melles griot tubes that are hard seal, and a LHB-569 which would be a close competitor to mine. But it's 750 bucks I think last I asked him about it for the tube and a mirror. Which is a bargain. They're very expensive. Though you can get some smaller or lower power ones for 300-500. But that doesn't include power, mirrors, mirror mounts , and anything to mount them in to keep them steady...

Save up :) it's well worth it though.

What are the practical applications for this? Can anything realistically be done with all that intracavity power? I know Sig mentioned a mechanical beam dump which I read up on a bit, but it doesn't seem like that would get much output , what with it being something mechanical vs. the speed of light...

Their original purpose was particle counters and gas analysis. As well as education.

But as we have powerful solid state and other things available now, they're not really used anymore, since they're so expensive to produce. Gas in general is going out of style as the cost usually doesn't outweigh the benefits a lot of the time. Solid state has improved so much in recent years that it is a better option for many applications. it is far cheaper, and can achieve far higher output at lower power consumption, and is much smaller than most gas lasers.

I hope they never stop the production of gas lasers, they are far more interesting and pretty (in my opinion). There is really a lot more to do with a gas laser and more to look at.
