Hence why a mechanical dump is so attractive. You won't get the high rep rate of a PC, but you should get detectable high peak pulses followed by a long dead time. Since it is impossible to instantaneously get a mirror into the beam path, or even get one mostly in place before the cavity has dumped, you won't get a full bore cross-section's output, but just a sliver, or crescent-moon at best. That's still something though.
I am curious though, how much of the bore cross section can be obscured before lasing ceases. I suppose you could test this right now, UK or Bloom. You've both got open cavities on hand.
