may have broken blu ray diode...

i harvested a blu ray diode out of a 360 hd dvd drive. with my terrible soldering skills, i ended up holding the soldering tool on it for a bit, and the diode was hot to the touch. i have no means of testing it right now. do you think its broken?
 





It's really impossible to tell until you test it. It's likely OK. Good luck.

Nah . . It's probably broke . . . .You should send to me immediately . . .Along with any others you have . . . .And send your cash along as well ;D ;D ;D

I wouldn't worry about it. You have to hook it up to see anyway. Might as well keep a positive mindset while you're preparing to drive it. I'll keep a positive thought for you.

I really doubt its broken. From my experience, these things really aren't super fragile to heat over a short period. I experimented with a cheap red diode once, i soldered so slow that the whole can was hot enough to burn if you touched it. I let it cool down for a bit and it still lased fine. No worries 8-) Just power it up and see!
 
Just don't do any stupid "testing" and you will most likely be fine.

Some people connect the diode directly to the batteries to "test" it. It's an interesting test, that tells you, your diode would have been ok, if only you hadn't tested it. ;)


The only safe way to test the diode is to connect it to a proper current regulated driver.
 
I also put a lot of heat into my diode when trying to free it's leads from the ribbon cable and mounting pad. Totally frustrated with my 25 watt soldering iron, I grabbed my weller 140 watt gun and melted all the plastic crap and solder off my diode. Figuring that I had killed it with heat, I set it up for bench testing. The diode was absolutely fine, and is now running at 95 ma in my host. My second PHR-803T was just as nasty to unsolder. I seemed to have an easier time unsoldering the PS3 sled diodes ... Until you bench test your diode with a current regulated supply, you won't know. Get it into a housing or heat sink before testing at higher currents.
 
I had a blue ray with all the pins broken off, I heated the hell out of it before managing to connect it up again, too hot to touch over long periods, it survives to this day  ;) As stated above they seem to be tougher than we think when heat is involved.
