im ordering parts for a 445nm 1watt-ish build, can anyone tell me if the high current drain batteries such as the 18650 are absolutely necessary for this much current? or could i get by with using an mxdl host with 3x aaa batteries?

Just no, AAA batts will not give you 1A even if it was your best dream.

The holder could be rewired to hold them in parallel.
That would give 1A.

You can get 1A out of an alkaline AAA, but at one volt and not for long.
Since a 445 needs 1A at something like 4,5-5,5V they will not work.

You may go for 3 x 10440's in parallel and using a boost driver, but they would still be inferior to a 18650.

well, my dilemma is that i already bought a mxdl heatsink from jayrob as well as the 3x aaa mxdl flashlight host from dx... think there are any 18650 hosts that will fit this heatsink (with some modification)? and yes i will be using the microboost from drlava

It is more or less impossible to get information on what hosts fit your heatsink.
I am not sure about the dimensions of respectively 3xAAA and 18650, and do not know if they are interchangeable.

If Jayrob have made a heatsink I am pretty sure he have considered the feasibility of the battery packaged and that 3 x 10440 in parallel will work just fine.

ahh ok. i think i'll go with the 10440 parallel idea then. my microboost driver will operate until voltage reaches 2 volts, i think that should be plenty to run the laser on 3 10440s for a while.

Search up for the mod to use an 18650 in your host. It is posted in a couple of places

I did use 3 10440's in parallel for awhile in my MXDL's but you cant beat the 18650.

BucketMouse;

Your 445nm will need the power of a name-brand #18650 cell.

They are the most advanced battery option we have for both lasers and flashlights.

They are manufactured by the millions by quality companies.

The 10440's MAY have 600mah capacity, which would total to 1800mah.

A quality 18650 cell will deliver 2600mah for hundreds of cycles.

ive decided on using the 18650 from everyone here's comments... will a protected 18650 cell fit into my mxdl 3405 host?? i heard the protected cells are slightly longer than the unprotected ones
