Well just an update. I just upgraded this build with 3.5W NDB7A75 445nm Laser Diode from DTR. Using the 3A xdrive.
My LPM measures 4.5W and I can still run this thing continuously. Heat seems to be properly managed but I only tried a 5 min test. A little afraid to go longer due to cost of the diode. But I can say with confidence that I am not worried about burning the laser out.
I am also happy to report that the aiptasias I am using this tool to destroy is effective. Effective range thru salt water and thru 3/4" plexi glass is about 6" but extreme care must be taken. When not shooting straight, the plexi does deflect the laser and can burn surrounding environment. I noticed this as one of my PVC pipes near by started smoking. I would love to publish my LPM results but I'm having trouble with the FTDI drivers on my mac.
So far so good and will update with long term progress. Will also be selling the guts of the old laser that was in this build.
Outstanding build, what a monster, 2 36650 cells should give you a long duty cycle.
Mind the reflections of the tank's acrylic sides and wear your eye protection.
Love the purple 2D MagLit host.
Excellent build ! Thanks for sharing it. I just ordered a flashlight/host a couple of days ago I plan on converting to incorporate cooling. Good to know it works so well ! REP +1
Not exactly my long term report but I have to say for those who are looking to do the same. 5W has solved my problems. I am able to vaporize the tissue of those pesky aiptasias and I can say with certainty that the big ones that were not deeply embedded in the rocks or in a crevice are vaporized. Usually after a few days they pop back out. This time theres just no sign of them.
I'll work on getting my lpm working and I'll post some charts. Thanks again DTR.
Here ya go as promised. Ran the test for 5 min. Actually ran it for much longer . I lost track of time then I realized the software actually doesn't stop.
The laser was warm but not hot. And it looks like power output increases over time if starting from cold. That just tells me I have plenty of headroom to pump more amps thru it if I wanted to. Just got to wait for better drivers.
I think I got enough capacity to dissipate more BTUS.
