Making Twelve Volts Three

Cheaper than the two resistors required to make a voltage divider?

Not cheaper, just another option;)
@ laserpyro, you can get cheaper than that but if you are ok with the cost it will do the job.

I'm willing to bet those adapters USE voltage dividers. Why are we afraid to DIY all of a sudden?

No, those adapters are switching DC-DC converters ..... for use network resistors dividers at 1500mA, you need 150 or 200 watt resistors (and probably can also cook an egg on them, LOL)

To divide 12 volts down to 3 volts.. those extra 9volts need to be
dissipated as heat... and the amount of heat depends on the final load...

To do that.... requires some high Wattage and physically large
Resistors if you want to build a Resistive Voltage Divider....

[EDIT]
HIMNL9... is correct...

A voltage divider doesn't work. It's ONLY for dividing voltages. They're not usable if you want to draw current. All you need to do is to apply Ohms law to them to see it.
