LPF History 107 – Final Exam

Today I ordered a couple of batteries for a group buy red laser I bought here years ago. I hope it still works.
It still works. I can't remember which group buy I bought it in but for those that remember timelord he got one too and he liked his as well...so that's saying something....or not...lol. I might have bought it from SenKat. The laser is a red 200mw and takes two CR123A cells.

Senkat and the EPIC Glowtorch red GB! :D I got one from him too, don't have it anymore though. :( Reminds me of when a bunch of the lasers arrived busted the first time round, then Senkat fell and chipped a tooth in his shop. In the end everyone got an awesome laser though.

I have Mike beat by a little-turning 74 on July 3rd.
AND my left eye is gradually getting 'foggy'& I see some black floaters too.
I am 66 and a few years ago my eye developed a macular hole. Without getting into all the misery details and the surgery required to repair it, it healed on it's own. Really a miracle because it's very rare for a macular hole to heal without intervention. I was left with a transparent floater that's almost directly in the center of my vision but it doesn't bother me that much. My vision is holding up but I do see a black floater every now and then. I am way overdue for an eye scan.

On top of all of that I only have one good eye to begin with. I put out my other eye when I was 8. Stupid but I am totally used to it.

That's it! Thank you. Is that GB thread still up? I can't find it.

EDIT: I found the thread. Thanks!

Found it: 51 pages, quite a long read. O____O

I'm still around !!! At 72, I have slowed a bit but I still play with my toys. My left eye was damaged in cataract surgery and I can't see to solder well any more and had to sell my plane but I survived covid easily !!! It's hard to believe - almost 14 years !
Carry on dudes !!!

Nice to see people who have been on here longer than me and still check in.

I'm only 59 and left eye is already very cloudy also my doctor told me if I got COVID-19 I wouldn't survive (thanks doc). I guess its due to the COPD and asthma issues I already have.

BUT, You can do what I do when soldering, get a third hand and a big magnifying glass or 3x reader glasses, etc.

I remember some of those old group buys and buying the diodes still in the replacement heads for the burners and blu-rays and extracting them. Building our own driver boards.

I got on here just after my wife bought me my first high power laser pointer as an anniversary gift. - 200mw and I still have it. But, my first Violet diode - I hooked it up after my wife went to sleep one night. It worked, I was so excited that I woke her up to show her what a violet laser beam looked like. Within an hour it was dead, still don't know why but boy was it sensitive. My wife woke up in the morning and I was like "I hope you remember last night, because that was it, its gone now."

I went Tuesday to CVS and got my Covid shot. I got the J&J one shot. Does your doc recommend getting vaccinated? I am happy I finally got it done and won't have to go back for the second shot. However it's likely everyone will need a booster shot later. And yes I know about the blood clots the 8 women or so got after receiving the J&J shot and one did die. However as far as I know there is no evidence linking the vaccine to the blood clots and around 7 million people have received the shot.

I do need the third hand, I am a bit shaky. I also need reading glasses. I love the helping hands and was using them when I joined the forum.

I read through all 50+ pages of Senkats group buy yesterday...lol. Brought back some great memories.

I still have a violet laser I harvested from a sled in an Axis module. I have not checked it to see if it still works but it should. Those diodes were a pain to harvest and were very sensitive. I killed a few myself.

Styropyro sent me a violet pointer and it puts out around 70mw's. At my age I can't see the beam in a dark room. I do vape and that does help to see the beam....lol.

I will eventually get a higher powered violet laser. I might even get a tri colored laser. I think that would be cool to play with.

Sounds like the amazing "Dilda"... ;)

I see you found the one you were reffering to from SenKat.

Glad to see each of you "old folks" back from LPF's heydays posting here again.Wish we could get more of the "not dead yet" to check in and let us know how they are doing.

I joined in Dec of 2009, am 68 now, retired in 2016, had cataract surgery last October and am amazingly back to 20/20 with the replacement corrected lenses, but still have an agravating number of floaters I take the AREDS supplement everyday to slow down the small amount of macular degeneration starting in my left eye.

Otherwise I take a hand full of pills for mostly minor maladies, I'm finding it a bit harder to jump out of bed and get off to a running start in the mornings, but the stiff joints pings and pangs haven't slowed me down too much, wife says I need hearing aids but I hear too much already.

My interest in lasers has been largely crowded out by my never seeming to have enough time now as it is for each new day's demands and distractions.

However, I started building the workshop I had long planned on doing so when I retired in 2016, and finally managed to get it all up and running just a few months ago. I'm teaching my 5 year old twin grandsons (7th set of twins in our family) electronics and they are loving it. i would post photos of my Workshop, but I can't seem to find any currently active thread for doing so.

Together We Can Make LPF Great Again! Replete with MLPFGA tee-shirts and temporary tattoos. Just need someone to build and sell a new luggable 10 beam combiner laser pointer to get the shock and awe hype started up all over again.

Glad to see you back despite some setbacks. MLPFGA! XD
I'd buy a hat or shirt. I noticed that a bunch of people with older accounts logging in but for the most part don't say anything. We get new members every day so hopefully the combination will increase traffic a bit more and encourage old and new to rekindle that interest in lasers again.
