Let's talk about Mars.

I have all parts of that Mars series ready to watch and am kind of excited to see it.
It's too bad we didn't keep pushing the envelope after going to the moon as I believe that we would already have been there if we had.
I didn't read through all the posts but this stuff reminds me how much I crave space type movies. Absolutely loved "Arrival". I've seen "contact" at least 10 times. Red planet, 2001, 2010, Promethius, Gravity, The Martian (seen it 5 times and got it in 3D too but haven't watched it yet but the book was fantastic), mission to mars, stargate, sunshine (a MUST see), Star Wars, Star Trek, Close encounters, Alien movies, ET, Apollo 13, Planet of the apes, Flyboys etc.... and those were the ones I could think of without looking at my dvd/blu-ray/3D collection.
I keep telling people to watch Sunshine but haven't come across anyone that has seen it yet. Look it up and watch it somehow. Seriously, would some of you watch that movie and tell me what you think? I've seen it at least 5 times. Can't believe Sci-Fi buffs here haven't seen it and it is not "old", it is a modern movie. Wish I could get the old disney movie "THe Black Hole" on blu-ray. Heard they are doing a remake on it.

I've seen Sunshine, absolutely amazing movie! I only wished they would make more movies in that style of genre where a group of explorers venture to other worlds and have different scenarios they must deal with occur. I've also seen Contact and enjoyed that movie very much!

After today's work I have a 5 day weekend so I'll most likely rent myself a movie

I think i've missed sunshine somehow, or forget watching it, but i'll add it to the download queue just in case.

The science of these things is not overly realistic though.

I loved the Martian as a movie, but it's not realistic in several key aspects that one would encounter when living (or stranded) on Mars.

I think this lack of scientific accuracy is required to make an entertaining movie. This would probably true of storylines where people get standed on an island or something like that: Reality would be very boring.

When stranded on Mars and presumed dead someone would probably put all effort in establishing communications to earth, which may be feasible given equipment available.

It's not very likely you'd actually have potatoes to plant though, who in their right mind would carry something that heavy and perishable for it's nutritional value on an mission to another planet?

Even if your intent was to grow potatos on some new world you'd probably be taking the much lighter dry seeds instead of moist, heavy, plantable ones.

I loved The Martian as well, fantastic movie. I saw it in theaters, and got the bluray directors cut with extra footage(didnt add much and could see why some scenes were cut ) I also love Stargate(seen many many times), Independence Day( I could probably recite every line), Of course all Star wars and Star treks, Ive seen all there is. I also love Contact, Close Encounters, The Abyss, Dune, Alien movies. I've never heard of Sunshine. How old is it?

Then as for the Black Hole, I don't think i've ever seen it. But I used to have a pop up book of it when I was a kid. Loved that pop up. it looked very cool from the pictures

I've seen sunshine. Pretty decent space/horror movie which hasn't gotten enough recognition.

I've actually watched it tonight - a bit too thin on the science side for me, and perhaps a bit thick on the horror side to some degree. I guess it's worth watching though.

I like stargate myself, also because the general concept is pretty good, especially in the earlier seasons of SG-1. Personally i like how it is/was set in present time, including the odd things you would run into when getting some interstellar transport system available while in the meantime having little to no other space capability.

Having it set in current times makes the earth-side of things more convincing displaying mostly mainstream technology for that. Somehow that makes it more 'connectable' that something set in the (distant) future.

I like star trek as well, though i find the very earth-centric qualities of it rather dubious. Since it's quite clear earth was not one of the first planets to develop warp drive it would be strange howit somehow became the center of things. It's a bit like how colonisation on earth worked, but the capital of earth somehow ended up in zimbabwe

Yes, SG1 was my favorite also. But I've found interesting even SG Universe. They also had very realistic problems there - almost everything on the space ship was malfunctioning

Well yeah, and the idea of the ship going places by itself to resupply was nice for a couple of episodes.

Sadly it got cancelled though so we'll never see the full potential of that series.

I guess the stargate universe has some potential for future series, but it has been 5 years now, so i wonder if there will be any.

I think it got canceled due to economical problems. The television decided that there were fewer people who watch it, so . . .
But AFAIK, the people who watched it were of great quality ;-)
It mixed Sci-Fi with drama. Many of the characters had their personal dramas and all of them had other common dramas also.
For example, Eli Wallace had to leave his ill mother, then he felt in an impossible love with Cloe who loves Lt Matthew Scott ... Realistic.
Dr. Rush is also interesting and controversial character, his love was also personal drama ... and so on..

I think character development was a great thing through all of the Stargate series really. This would apply to Star Trek as well, which makes the shows more interesting to watch and gives side storylines that make decent episodes themselves.
