Plasmas... tend to not look so good in bright rooms since the light can bounce off and make it not look completely black.
What kind of fruitcake watches TV in a brightly lit room anyways?

A mere $700 bought me an HP DLP 800x600 projector. It's lasted almost three years now (2114 hours on the meter as of now). The resolution isn't cutting-edge, but figure it's better than DVD Which is 720x480. The biggest plus is that it's screen is

I don't do much shopping, but I doubt any of you can locate a plasma screen or LCD with a size of 82 inches for $700. Projectors FTW!

Two Cons: 1. Lifetime is limited to 2000-3000 hours. The bulb burns out. It can be replaced, but for a significant cost upwards of $500. many consumers tend to upgrade their TVs after 3-5 years anyway.
2. Room must be dark or dimly lit. But like I mentioned above, who watches TV in the sun?

My living room has a big sliding glass door, so that lets a good bit of light in even with the blinds closed. Plus, my girlfriend and I like to have some light in the room during the day, so usually keep the blinds open anyway. An LCD is just more practical for me.

If you're watching in a room without a lot of windows or only artificial lighting, then a projector or plasma would be great. Or, some people really don't care how the TV looks, as long as its big, so it makes no difference, plasma or LCD ;D

You could build an lcd 1080p projector for under $1000 witch uses bulbs that cost less than $50, Do a search I've seen quite good results.

I have a hitachi 42" "1080p" plasma (I put 1080p in quotes because the resolution is actually 1024x1080, not the full 1080 but better than the 720p's. I cant remember the technology behind it... it was pretty interesting to read about though)

The picture is freaking awesome on it... the factory settings suck but once you tweak it a bit, it really looks great. The colors and blacks dominate my girlfriends dad's 50" sumsung LCD.

I got a super good deal on it a year ago, but soon I'll probably buy another. Here is a picture I have of it:

1024x1080 WTF... the ratio is 16x9... are the pixels themselves rectangular?

I got a 46" Sony Bravia Full HD (1080p), it is great, but i'd prefer the 12-bit and 120Hz features the samsung TV's offer....

great screens to connect your pc to, though.
