Okay, I watched a Vampire movie last night and as I always am after movies was a bit taken over by the idea of vampires after the movie. Happens to me everytime. If it is a spy movie, I think spy for a day or so or if it is a street racing movie I have to pay damn good attention to cops so I don't get pulled over for speeding. Anyway, I decided to watch a second movie and a central part of it happened to be lasers. So I decided to see how many good, enjoyable, laser themed movies there are out there. I'll start I guess.

"Real Genius"(1985)

This is the movie I watched last night and I have to say it was an amazing movie and I enjoyed it VERY much. I am not sure exactly how legitimate it was from a science viewpoint but everything seemed theoretically sound, although some of the power ratings seem quite high for 1985. I recommend it completely! 5 Stars definitely.:D *EDIT* link to watch the movie for free here(gotta love hulu): Real Genius

I don't think one can talk of lasers without thinking at least a little bit about "Star Wars"(only the original 3 though, screw the prequel). Star Wars isn't so much scientifically sound but I doubt anyone here can say they absolutely hate it....come on, you KNOW the first time you saw Luke pick up his father's lightsaber and ignite it you said "I want one of THOSE....".

Anyway, there are two examples to start with. I need Laser Chasers so I don't get obsessed with movie themes. :p Alright....annnnd.....go! ;)

Man, that movie isn't even sold by iTunes! Any places of you know about to watch it? Or does one have to go the old fashion route and find a VHS player and VHS tape of it? ;)

It's not exactly a movie, and it's not exactly laser themed.. But "The Big Bang Theory" series has quite a lot of accurate laser scenes and references.. :D

The big bang series, eh? I will DEFINITELY have to check that out!

That movie came out when I was a kid, and has been a favorite since.

There do seem to be a couple of flaws, ive only noticed a few.

1- The laser they have is 5MW, from what I know, this power has not yet been
achieved from a single laser... possibly an array though.. not sure.

2- The laser is said to be 600nm, with this in mind, the beam does not
appear orange, or yellow in the least, more of a pink purple.

3- There appears to be no optics in the laser used, yet the divergence
looks outstanding. Watch the scene following the 'test fire' the holes
in the lab, windows, trees, and statue, look to be all the same size.
The hole last shown is the restaurant sign, this one seems to be 2x
the size, so divergence was acknowledged at some point in the script
or maybe because the shot was filmed from further away, they just made it larger...

4- The goggles they wear in the 'test fire' scene are red, if the laser was actually
600nm, there wouldn't be much protection offered.

5- Dont get the lead apron's, unless the laser is emitting x-rays..??

6- The popcorn scene in the end was recently deemed 'busted' in an
episode of mythbusters. The laser being able to pop that much volume
may be possible, but it wouldn't break out the windows etc.

7- popcorn scene, Kent looks up at the beam coming through the window
and striking its target. How Kent would have intact retinas after this would
be a bit of a stretch IMO.

8- Kent's tracking mirror by the looks of it, would have melted under such stress.

Great movie, but Hollywood is Hollywood.

Another movie that features a laser, not strictly about it though, is
'The Manhatten Project'. A lab where plutonium is made, has a copper
vapor which is shown to cut through metal, and even light a cigar :D

I actually noticed all of those points about that movie except #3 and to a small extent #8....I mainly got hung-up over the huge amount of power and the wideness of the beam....

"Spies like us" is very roughly based around a top secret laser-like weapon. It's also quite a funny movie :D

Oooh, a movie I have never seen but keep telling myself I must see! lol

You never seen austin powers? what is wrong with you?

My father was a pastor throughout my childhood. As such, Austin Powers was viewed as vulgar. He is no longer a pastor but I just never got around to viewing it :/

the big bang theory show?

I've got a rock,paper,scissor,lizard,spock shirt :D

OMG.....that's why I cringe at religion. Never good to shelter your children from a world they must eventually face.
