Laser melted safetey goggles

I bought a pair of safety goggles from lazerer.com which filter 532/445. I pointed my 445 at the goggles (which were placed on the ground) which is running at about 1.2-1.3W and it began to melt a hole through the goggles. Is this normal? Admittedly they are relatively cheap (paid around $25 for each pair) and I am considering asking for a refund. Where can i get safety goggles which wont melt??

That's normal.

They absorb the energy instead of transmitting it through.

Id be careful using a pair that you have already destructively tested like that.

its normal but shows they are working, if our googles don't reflect the laser and don't let it pass they must absorb it, be hard to find something made from plastic that could take the energy of your laser and absorb the energy as heat, and not start to melt.

You have admitted to purposely damaging your Laser Safety Goggles....
There is no Refund in your future.

Yes that damage is normal... That's what they were designed to do.
If you wanted a Glass pair then be prepared to fork out more than
the price of your Laser...

BTW... since there is a hole in your Laser Safety Goggles I highly
suggest that you get a new pair....

Would those Lazerer goggles be able to protect from a direct him from a 1-1.2W 445nm laser? I have read and read and a lot of people think that they couldn't.

I was going to purchase a few pairs for my family just in case, but don't want bad protection. Thanks for your time.

Laser safety goggles are made to protect you from a incident hit and not a continuous beam till it melts through the plastic lens.

What he did should never happen in real life if you are wearing them to protect your eyes, so yes the glasses he had would most likely protect you from laser beams that they are designed to protect you from.

If you want laser safety glasses that won't melt then get some with "GLASS" lenses and open up that wallet right now !

Laser Safely Goggles/Glasses are not a bullet proof vests.
They will give you time to get out of harms way...
They will protect you in case of an accident. In most cases
this is a short duration hit not a continuous non stop hit.

Think of laser safety goggles as leather gloves...

When you pick up something hot, you don't feel it right away and thus can hold it there for a short period of time. Then the heat starts to come through and burns your hands.

Laser Safety goggles are only good for a certain amount of time before the beam begins to melt through the lens (for higher powered ones anyway)

They just give you a chance to move out of the way, much like putting down whatever hot object you had in your gloves.

Guys... questions of refund aside, not one person has actually directed the OP to where to get good safety goggles, which is that the OP wants to do:banghead:

@MrJuice - Get certified goggles. There are links for three options for certified goggles in my signature.

@Ryanrenesis - I never tested them destructively, but iirc/afaik they are supposed to stand up to 10 seconds of cw exposure. Not sure at what power level though.

It's like claiming your warranty of the crumple zone of your car because it broke when you tested it.

The EN 207 certifications requires that the eyewear keeps it's rated protection for a 10 second direct exposure.
