Laser eye surgery: All I can say is WOW!

that is nuts! haha. didnt think it involved cutting the eye lid surface.

Yea i love my 20/20 vision, i pray i dont change it due to laser entertainment! =D

I am now much more thankful for my 20/15 vision.

-Mike

Did you have the surgery? I've got 20/15 also, courtesy of that same type of surgery - sure beats what I had before - 20/350 in my worst eye! But seriously, if you think it looks nasty, you ought to smell it - ever smell burning hair? That's something I won't soon forget - the stench of microscopic parts of my cornea being vaporized by an excimer laser!

I had 20/20 until I broke my face. 4 titanium plates and 12 screws later it improved to 20/15 *shrug*

@bobhaha - 20/350 is very possible. It gets much worse then that!

-Mike

I thought the worse your eyes the lower the number.. what does 20/350 mean is that like night vision or x-ray eyes or LASER EYEs!! jks... but srsly wat does 20/350 mean.. I thought the highest you can get is 20/20.

Thanks -Adrian

That was scary! I don't think i blinked once through out the whole vid!

I had 20/15 until i reached 30 then it started going down hill from there

on another note thats when i started getting into lasers too hmmm--naw

The further from 20 you go the worse your vision is considered. 20/20 and 20/15 are very very similar. The only difference between the two is that with 20/15 you have two focus distances rather than one. I don't think I can explain that any "less medical".

As far as I know, the first number is how close an object needs to be for you to make it out, and the second number represents how close an object needs to be for someone with "perfect" eyesight to make it out.

So, 20/20 is perfect. 20/350 means someone with perfect vision could make out a given object at 350 feet (or closer) while YOU would need the same object to be 20 feet away (or closer) to make it out.

20/15 of course is when a "perfect vision" individual would need an object to be 15 feet (or closer) away to make it out, while YOU could make it out at 20 feet (or closer). Therefore, your vision is 33% better than someone with 20/20.

20/350 is positively atrocious. You WOULD NOT be able to function without the use of corrective lenses. In fact:

"legal blindness is defined as visual acuity (vision) of 20/200 (6/60) or less in the better eye with best correction possible"
-wikipedia

That is to say, if it CAN be corrected with glasses, you're not legally blind.

I have 20/10.. hoping to keep it that way. I'm 30 so we'll see.

And that video gave me the heebie-geebies from start to finish. Scraping, cutting, etc... gah! I'm not even all that squeamish, but there's something about the eyes..

Actually, for the purposes of corrective eyewear, there are also numbers assigned to how good or how poor your vision is - these range from -1 all the way up to -8 or more (the negative sign denotes near-sightedness, which means you can see well close up but not at a distance. Far-sightedness is measured with positive numbers, +1 and up. In this case, as with the 20/whatever, the higher the number the worse your vision is. I was something like a -3.2 in one eye and a -3.5 in the other. These numbers have to do with the degree of curvature and thickness of the corrective lenses required.
But yes, you can be much worse than that - unfortunate people with "coke bottle" glasses are usually over -7. Back when I had my surgery done in '99, they usually would turn away people that were over -6, and most far-sighted people (if you're farsighted you're kinda screwed as your eyeball is very flat and there is little for the laser to be able to remove, though they have made advances since 1999.) My vision was correctible to 20/20 but glasses always gave me headaches and contacts can be hard on your eyes and are a pain to care for. Basically w/o correction I could see the big "E" on the chart and about 2 lines below that.

Then there's astigmatism, which is basically an uneven surface to the eyeball, sort of like looking thru an old wavy glass window. I had a little of that, more in one eye than the other, but the laser got rid of that too.
Also, some of the other aspects of the surgery they don't show you are kind of cool too...they have a device you look into that measures the exact shape and curve of your cornea, and that info is what is programmed into the laser to "machine" the cornea to correct vision.

But yes, lasers can give you back your vision or they can take it away....if you're not careful!

Wow, that's a terrible way to get a very minor improvement in your vision!

20/350 means that what a normal person could read from 350 ft away that eye only can read the same thing 20 feet away
