Get that Spinrite program here. If you use it, let me know if it works; I'd like to know.

Also, SMART might say it's bad, or going bad, but is it still bootable?

sorry for another off topic, but if the drive is still bootable, you might want to skip spinrite, get a new drive, d/l norton ghost from a torrent site (or look for "hirens boot cd".. ghost is on there among 1000 other great tools) and duplicate your drive to a new one.

I do network consulting for a living, and one of my specialties is data recovery. If the drive really is going bad physically, a program like spinrite can actually make it worse. With how inexpensive HDD's are now days, I personally feel it isn't worth the risk trying to 'repair' a drive that's going bad... Just ghost the data off it onto a new drive and be confident that your data is safe.

(to those who recommended spinrite, I don't mean to just dismiss your suggestion. It does indeed fix a lot of drive problems, if the problems are software related, or didn't get a good write or something. If the drive platter got a scratch or something like that, though, the repair programs will just grind away at that spot, trying to fix it, but really it just expands the damaged area)

Well, I've currently got the newest version of ghost in the process of making an image to another HDD and when that's done will send the other drive back in for warranty repair. I will try to reformat it and see if there's nothing wrong with it using seagates diagnostics utility. Hopefully I'm sucessful in saving the data. I did use windows backup to make a backup of ALL the data a week ago, yet don't know how reliable that's going to be in saving ALL of the data.

It's not the OS that is reporting it as bad but the bios. so I'd be inclined to believe it's not a software thing but is indeed a physical defect/damage with the drive. The drive has 140 gigs of data, so it's not something that should take long but ghost has been running for a total of 24 hours and is still at 31%. Not to mention when the computer boots up, it's about as fast as my Pentium 1 188mhz processor that I had back in 1999.

I worked in a computer repair shop for a year so am pretty versed in diagnostics applications and methods of saving data, so I'm utilizing all of the tools at my disposal before I give up completely. However given that the computer runs so slow and I'm not inclined to damage the drive further by doing anything BUT ghosting, I'm not going to use it for anything but the imaging. So don't expect me on as much as I traditionally am. It also means I can't do my homework so I have to get it done as quickly as possible.

On another note. I have inquired to the anodizer on the status of the remaining barrels and they indicated to me they were doing the custom one's at about a rate of 4-5 a day. Considering that there are 40 or so custom barrels it's going to take a bit of time. I do again appreciate everyone's patience.

Is there a means that you know of to determine if the damage is physical or otherwise??? I've tried other programs but this was before the advent of "smart drives" and nothing short of a low level format would tell you for certain.

Well physical damage can be easy to tell if the drive makes noise, vibrates to much, gets too hot, or doesn't turn on. I once thought the HD blew on me but it turned out to be my motherboard. that doesnt happen often cause the motherboard docent have any moving parts on it. I work for some PC support department and we found drives made by Maxtor fail alot. when other companies like seagate or western digital seem to last forever. we just throw out the old hard drives that dont work, so I know nothing about recovering the data. =/

Yeah, I've seen the controller on the MB fail before too! The 2nd controller still worked tho, so I just moved the drive there.
I see seagates fail more often than any others.. guess western digital is the winner : )

Kenom, ghosting taking that long is not a good sign. A drive that size shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. Then you pretty much have to run some sort of scan for bad sectors, and risk making it worse.

Try ghosting again.. if it doesn't work, I'd personally just run chkdsk to scan for bad sectors, and try ghosting again.
If that doesn't work, I go for things like spinrite, or any of a bunch of others.. that utility cd I mentioned has a lot of great recovery programs to try.

As far as being able to tell if it's physical damage or not... I'm not sure. If I find bad sectors, I assume it is.
I still use them. I format them and put them in a mirror or striped set, so when they fail, the data is still safe. ; ) (I don't risk it at clients, but that's what I do at home w/ all the bad HDD's I collect)

I had some bad drive that caused the whole drive chain to not work until I removed that one drive. Damned DOA drive from Newegg. I didn't bother RMAing it through Newegg though, because sometimes they seem to buy bad batches of things (sometimes on the cheap), to let people just warranty it through the manufacturer. They were doing that for some time with some known bad Seasonic PSUs that were recalled. I didn't want to risk getting another POS, and paying shipping AGAIN.

If you've tried ghosting it and you're missing files, try getting a copy of Stellar Phoenix. It can read through the file structure even when the tables have been damaged or destroyed, as well as undelete things. Love that program, even if it's sometimes unstable.

well the ghost completed after 32 hours. I'm going to do a chkdsk on the new ghost and go from there.

yeah! Stellar Phoenix is awesome! Ive saved so many peoples data w/ that program.. saved entire companies, cause they hadn't been backing up, then decided to try to do maintenance on their own servers.. Erased important database and system directories.. basically lost everything.
then Stellar Phoenix to the rescue!

so uhh..
isn't this forum about lasers or something?

LOL. A person has to do what they can to make sure that the largest thread stays the largest.

Clone was unsucessful, it finished but I can't boot sucessfully to it. oh it tries but obviously some files are corrupted so I'll just grab a small 8gig drive and load the OS to it and move the data from the clone since I can access all the data off it. so in that it was a success. The bad drive will get sent back and hopefully will get replaced under warranty.
