Jayrob VS. LarryFDFW AR lens VS. Aixiz standards

Ok...

I just tested a long open can set at 431mA's and the difference is also 5%.

It must have something to do with how close the lens must be to the different diodes to get focus. The closer the lens must be, the less of a difference you will have.

Long open can red at 431mA's:

* AixiZ acrylic (un-opened) - 240mW's

* AixiZ acrylic (back opened) - 252mW's

It should be mentioned that, although I never tried it (other than this power comparison), I have read that the plastic on the back of the AixiZ lenses will start to melt if you do not cut it open... (that's why I have always cut the back opened since my first build)

Aixiz Prototype 405nm AR glass lens arrived !!

Testing to begin as soon as I get free hour or two.

Do you have a picture of the lens Milos...

We'll be waiting for the results of your tests...;)

Jerry

unfortunately they sent me prototype same style as aixiz glass without threads on the front. I'm sure they will change that per request, and probably have both styles (fully threaded and partially threaded)

will post results this evening

Milos;

All of the shipments of Aixis glass lenses I have received, are completely threaded from end to end.

I don't have much confidence in the Chinese lenses.

ColdStl tested one supposedly designed for 405 nm:

. ColdStl New Lens Test

He got only a 9.3% increase for $31 (O'like pricing-$28+$3).

ColdStl - ...not worth it to me.
were his thoughts after testing.

Larry, you have every right to be skeptical.

here are results. I will update this thread beginning later as i'm in hurry today.

Violet:

no lens - 338mW ( a bit more than previous tests, never the less, i tripple checked it!)
Aixiz acrylic with open back = 261mW
Aixiz 405 AR glass Lens Prototype#1 = 275mW

This new glass lens from Aixiz lets 81.4% light through (blocking 18.6%)
It is only 5.4% increase in output over standard Aixiz acrylic with open back.

This seems to be multi element assembly just like standard aixiz glass lens, but AR coated to improve 405nm transmission. Not even close improvement to 405-G-1 lens though.

Beam is same width as old standard acrylic or glass from aixiz. Opening on the back 5.15mm, splash around dot minor, same as acrylic lens!

so,

its nothing we have hoped for. I will report this to Aixiz, and tell them that if they want to be competitive, they will need to get much closer to data I measured with 405-G-1 based lens assemblies.

o, and for those interested how this lens performed with red ~658nm..

the worst result of all lenses so far. !

no lens 348mW
Aixiz 405 AR glass Lens Prototype#1 = 260mW

not even worth further tests or comments.

best regards my friends..

Milos,

thanks once more for taking the time and making the effort. Of course it would have been good news for everyone, but nothing is free, as the saying goes.

I've already asked Igor to put the pedal to the metal because we all could use a $30 version of Jay & Larry's successful lenses

Yep... thanks Miloš for checking it out.

Not surprised at the result, but we still had to find out!

I have been told that the coating is a relatively cheap part of the 405-G-1 glass lens, and that it is the shape and design of the lens that makes it expensive.

I have been told that any high quality lens such as this, (or Meredith) will be expensive unless you buy bulk...

Yes, in a way, I'm happy that good quality is not getting crushed by cheap source. On the other hand, we all need cheaper source of good lens for out every increasing in power 405nm projects. I mean guys, we went from 10-20mW 405nm lasers 14 months ago, to 200-300mW today. Blue ray technology (burners) are still not even at their 50% of full speed comparing to how far DVD got.

we must use good glass only. Acrylic lens with high powered diodes is like installing a Bugatti Veyron engine into a plastic "Trabant" . :-)

keep experimenting..

best regards

Just to let you guys know, I have contacted Susie.. she has told me that the lens she is using is in fact not a 405-G-1 lens. She said she will soon get some specs for us on power loss/gain over the Aixiz acrylic lens! all she knows at the moment is that the lens has a 20% power loss.... I'm guessing that means 20% loss from bare diode to lens, she wasn't really clear about that!

Anyway just to let you guys know! -Adrian

o-like's design is totally different, its a multi-element lens, instead of a single acromatic lens in the 405-g1 "lens".

manuel

O-like and Aixiz 405nm glass coated lenses are multi element (i think they are identical)

Multi element lenses absorb more light, but have nicer projected dot. Dot looks exactly as it would with aixiz acrylic.

single element lenses are more efficient but collect and project more artifacts arround "dot" that stands for both red and violet diodes

well wat would the expected power loss compared with jayrob or Larry's lens?? Soo basically this only benefits people that can't afford 405-G-1 lens and can't use acrylic lens cause they degrade.. if so THATS ME!!

..which means that
bobhaha;587904she has told me that the lens she is using is in fact not a 405-G-1 lens.[/QUOTE said:
its out of question if its a (single lens) 405-g1 one :-)
by itself, the multi-lens-design doesnt say anything, just like glass vs acrylic by itself doesnt mean much (there could be 200$ acrylic lenses with better specs than glass, theoretically. glass has some advantages though, like toughness).
in this (o-like's and aixiz') design it means higher losses (more coated surfaces and more material to shine through), a thicker beam (because of the longer focal length) and less scatter and wings (with less power) because of the smaller numeric aperture.

wait.. i am sure with all the above for aixiz' multielement 405nm lens.. did i mix this up? was sure its the same with the o-like one?

manuel

It is correct that generally speaking acrylic vs. glass, or multi element vs. single glass is way too general and doesn't mean much. Of coarse many acrylic elements are higher quality than cheap glass. But we are speciffically comparing aixiz acrylic lens, and its performance.

We are talking and comparing performance of very specific models that are available to us. That was the purpose of this thread!

results and opinions are above.(and below)
