Is this how bright a 50mw 405nm laser is supposed to be?

I bought a 50mw 405nm purple laser from dealextreme (yes I know.. :whistle:) 3 weeks ago, for around 35 dollars. (Not a lot money for me because I live in the EU) Now it arrived at my home today and I tested it out. But unfortunately it looked like it was broken. After I wasted some time trying to get it work I noticed that it does actually work.. but is VERY dim, it doesn't even make GITD stuff glow.. Now I'm really wondering if this laser is supposed to be this dim. (But I doubt it)

I've included some pictures which are photoshopped a bit to match what I see in real-life.

It just looks like this laser diode has been LED'd before it even arrived. :mad:

No way dude. First off, DX's lasers are mostly all the time underrated for mw's by the factory. Give or take, the factory settings will always be different when you buy a laser for DX. I.e, the 50mw lasers i bought several times from them--one could burn, one couldnt.....That to me looks like a 20mw or less laser. O_o
 
Meh, I knew that anything bought from DX has it risks.. :undecided: Oh well, the host is still nice for future builds and I got an extra 18650 battery. I'm not going to make this mistake twice though, so I'm probably going to order a 100mw blu-ray from o-like later. It's gonna cost a bit more but it's surely worth the price. Susie checks all the lasers she sells so it won't be underpowered. :)

I might also just request a RMA, but shipping it back also costs money so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I bought one listed as a 5mW from ebay and it's WAY brighter than that. I used the Laserbee I to test it and it's actually 32mW
 
thats cuz its mostly IR messing up your laserbee

There is NO InfraRed light coming from a bluray diode. IR light is a problem with DPSS modules (Green Yellow, 473nm blue). Violet diodes and red diodes do not use an IR "pump" to make light

Nope, his laser is TOASTed!

IR will inflate the rating, not decrease it. This laser is DOA and is a 405nm diode (blu-ray)
IR isn't a problem here.

News flash for some of you here. If the mail gets xrayed it can destroy the matrix that makes up the diode lasing component. X-rays can make conductive tracks in the diode matrix causing damage.

a typical X-ray machine can deliver 10s to 100sR/hr. This is more than enough to destroy an improperly protected laser diode.
