Back on to types of Camera's: Standstill VS Video Cam

I have researched craigslist and there are a LOT of options out there. What would you guys prefer, Standstill OR Video? Each has their Pro's & Con's. I am looking for two key things: Zoom & Screen size (larger=better)

Standstill: Cheaper/Value, Compact

Video Cam: Typically larger LCD Screen

I noticed on craigslist that there is a lot of "broken" camera's. I am going to do some more research on what things other than the CCD allow for IR. Size is going to be something I want to keep in mind & it's not really practical to have all those functions not being used: I mean Record, flash, storage, and so on. It'd be really nice to find a "non-functioning" camera for cheap & only use the Functions that I need.



What would be really sweet is to find some type of screen that would allow me to "project" onto it. After completion of this intrument, my next task will be create a Range Finder (Laser). This is pretty simple actually. Initially I was just going use a seperate screen and mount it underneath my LCD, but why not just head with one screen and somehow project my "range/distance #" onto my LCD

I would defiantly go with a still camera. You can find some of them with a quite large screen. In fact, you can find some that are nothing but a screen across the whole back. Plus, you might find the flash useful at some point.

I have a Cannon PowerShot A590. It can see IR quite well, I didn't buy it for it's ability to see IR, I bought it for the 4x optical zoom and stabilization. It uses a dim red light to focus which I assume is just there to give people a visible indicator for the IR light. The dim red focusing light looks a LOT brighter on the camera screen.

I bought a filter off of ebay some time back which filters out visible light leaving only near IR. Below are some of the pictures I took with that, they are quite interesting.

Here is a scene of some friends:

Here is the same scene in IR, notice the dark ominous sky, notice that deciduous trees are dark but evergreen trees glow brightly, and you might also notice that there is a lot less light in the IR range, so the exposure is longer (making everything slightly blurry). If my hand was steadier you would also notice the grainyness that looks somewhat like what you would see in an old photo. All images in the near IR have this quality.

Here is another pair where you can see the glowing vegetation and the dark sky:

Looks similar to Gen 0-1 NV as expected, where you located? NW? Reminds me of Montana

It's simple, some cameras use an IR light to focus before taking the picture. Your cheap Chinese camera doesn't. I think you're just jumping to conclusions.

Anyhow, why are you still trying to troll this thread bennitt? Can you really think of nothing except trying to make me look bad? I would think you would have something better to do with your time.

AFAIK thats not legal in most states.

See & Kill them & when I say "them" I mean "varmits.

There is a fine line in with whether it is legal or not. In MN, you CAN hunt Varmits at night: including Coon, Fox, and Yotes. You CAN use Night Vision as a "view source" however as soon as you attach it to a rilfe, it becomes illegal. See the fine line?

I am just going to use it as a "view source" like goggles ocourse

If you click the edit button the third button on the left of that edit box will allow you to delete a post yourself. Moderators around here normally don't delete a post unless it contains prohibited content, you can do it yourself.

Additionally, it would make things look prettier in the above couple of posts if you edited your reply so that it didn't show a double copy of the pictures I posted.

Its the Yotes I will be after along with the Coon. I'm an outdoorsman, I own livestock > We are having a problem with Yotes killing chickens & turkeys, the Coon have also been getting into the Pens. We own several thousand acres & it'd be pointless to fence.

I am not sure what you want me to do. I haven't double posted, and I have no control over other people's posts. Do you suggest that I delete my original pictures?

I am sorry about the undesirable elements, Brittany, they have been bothering me as well, and not just in this thread. The mods here seem unable or unwilling to do anything about them, so they just run around attempting to annoy people.

It's sad, really, because there truly are a lot of helpful and friendly people here. You just have to learn to recognize the trolls and attempt to ignore them.
