im using LG 20x DVD burner diode, please help!

hey i only have heatsink, i dont have TEC in my unit , but if possible, do you think it can be 416mA on my unit? actualy im using 2 rechargeable CR123 (3.6v each), please give me some idea for this, thanks.

How big is your heatsink? Post pics.
Sure, I think you should push it up to 430 mA max as long as you keep your duty cycles short. (unless you have a big heatsink) The diode he's using is a 18x, yours is a 20x so I think it can take current a lot better, although you'd have to change the resistors since they limit the current to 400mA.

what value of resistors do i need if 416mA and also 430mA, and how many seconds will i run on that current?

How tight does the aixiz module fit into the heatsink, it has to be really tight (so tight that you have to use something else than your hands to get it in place, like a vice) so that it can transfer heat effeciently.

actually befor i put the collimator in i file the heatsink bit by bit until i got the exact fitting to insert the collimator very tight, it very hard to press it in, then after the collimator is in place i put the LD into it then solder it, carefully.

Ok dude, as long as the housing is tight it should be fine, as for the resistor, you'd have to use a 2.7 ohm which would limit the current to about 450mA, use your pot to set it at 430mA, also if you're going to run at that current I suggest you keep your duty cycles short, not so much because of the LD, but because you're using a .5 watt pot, so you don't overheat it. ;)

Guys someone in my other thread say that the IR (nearly visibe)LD in the LG 20x burner can also burn things... :-/ is it true ? anyone?

folks is it true that IR LD in the LG 20x DVD burners can light a match? if its possible , what was the driver settup using DDL LD driver, and whats the power input and current?, im just curious guys, cuz someone give me some interesting idea about this, help me on this part.thanks.

it is true. here is a thread with a pic of a dissected 20xLG IR LD. http://www.laserpointerforums.com/forums/YaBB.pl?num=1197256345/11#11
read down a bit.
currently i run my second 20x LG IR diode at 140mA w/o duty cycle considerations and i believe it puts out at least 100mW. i am reluctant to push it much higher than that because my first one died at 150mA. If all of those IR LDs come with such weird angled chips, the beam profile may be distorted if the LD is installed in regular coaxial housings. For close range burning it wouldnt really matter that much, though...

phenol what driver did you use? power input? what was the resistor value? do you have schematic diagram for that? how was the focusing set up of that IR LD? it produce heat much?

as drivers i use my own designs with op amps. they are adjustable via low power trim pots and i dont have to care about their wattage rating. If you want to use DDL's regulator, for 140mA you'll need a 8.9-ohm resistance. since the forward drop of IR LDs is lower /mine is ~2.1-2.2V at 140mA/, your input voltage can also be a bit lower than 6V. I have pressed the LD in a cheap pointer housing, which is thermally coupled to a small aluminum sheet. At such a low current it barely gets warm after continuous operation. I use an ARC acrylic collimating lens. Its coating is centered at 670nm, though. With it i am able to focus it down to a tiny dot ~10cm from the aperture before the lens pops out. It can light matches for sure at 1meter, i havent tried longer distances.

Adgmeijin, hold on a bit, you just finished your red laser, get some goggles for that first.
If you want to start to mess around with IR, it is essential you get IR goggles before you make the laser. Remember you can't see IR, and if it's hiting your eye you might not even notice until it's too late. :o

yep, these near IR ones look deceptively dim for the power they put out, which makes instinctive precautions less pronounced.

Re: im using LG 20x DVD burner diode

guys its true that the IR in the LG 20x burner drive was truely powerful enough to light matches ;D, i ran it with DDL LD driver using 2 rechargeable CR123, @ 150mA, it lights a match at least 1.5ft max 8-), i didnt try if i can light a match further, is there a possibility for that? :-/
