Im going to Dublin Ireland to install a YAG laser

So I leave tomorrow from the east coast, should be there early Monday morning. I’m going to Dublin University to install a pulsed laser vacuum deposition system. Im installing a microsecond Q-switched high power density YAG laser with an output wavelength of the 4th harmonic (something around 266nm) and a UHV automated vacuum system.
This should be fun ;)

These are the systems I build:

This is a video of the system:

the laser was already on-site.

I’ll try to get some videos of the laser firing and ablating some material. Trust me, the plasma created by a focused megawatt of power density is rather impressive! And we do it in an Argon filled chamber! Very pretty colors:

Re: Im going to Dublin Ireland to install a YAG la

I am so jealous. My wife and I have been to Dublin twice. It is a GREAT place to visit. Remember these words

Pub Crawl
Literary crawl
Temple Bar

Plus there are lots of things to do that have hardly any alcohol involved ;)

Peace,
dave

if you go to cork...DONT KISS THE BLARNEY STONE!! the locals like to piss on it b/c they know the tourists like to kiss it. ::)

You wont find that on DX.

zOMG!!! I don't know what the f.. that is exactly but it's so awesome and shiny!!!11 :o :o

It looks like a mini deathstar ...

Pretty awesome stuff

Looks like very shiney mine. ;D

So here’s the laser I was working with.

It’s a Q-Switched 4’Th harmonic 10 microsecond’s pulsed YAG laser that we managed to get up to 4 watts at 266nm!

This is the plume of the laser ablating material (zinc oxide) in a vacuum. The spot was focused down to some 3 microns in diameter.

And this is how much material we deposited on a silicon wafer in 20,000 pulses.
You can see the clean silicon around the edges ware it was masked off by the holder.

Here’s a video of the YAG running, you can see the 532nm (green) in the KTPs.

Re: Im going to Dublin Ireland to install a YAG la

Very impressive!! Is that 4W average power or is that the peak power of each pulse?

Re: Im going to Dublin Ireland to install a YAG la

4 watts average.

so if my math is correct:

Average power: 4 watts
Pulse frequiency: 10 hz
Pulse duration: 10^-6 seconds (10 microseconds)

--------------------------------------------------------

4 watts = 4 joules/sec

4/10 = 0.4 joulse per pulse

0.4 x 10^6 = 400,000 peak power (watts or joules) im not sure which unit this represents, watts maybe????.

--------------------------------------------------------

correct???
