i may haved scratched the diode window, should i decan?

I just received an s06j diode and copper module, and I think I may have scratched the window with the tension spring. Did I scratch this or is this a defect from sled scavenging? How common are scratched windows? Did I just join an exclusive club?

Looks pretty awful and the defect is amplified through the lens.

Should I attempt to decan this diode? Or extract and replace the diode?

I literally just received this last night.

Don't see a scratch but it does look a little off by the dark perfectly straight line. Is it possible the window was pushed loose? You can try and turn it to see if the pattern changes. Also does not look too bad as long as the window is not loose. You would be better leaving it as it is than trying to decan it. How does the beam and dot look with the lens in?

Decanning is not very easy, and will also make your diode degrade faster.

You say it's very noticeable with your lens in place as well?

I have never decanned a diode before, but I have removed the front glass window multiple times. Nothing fancy, I simply break the window, and then snap off any jagged edge with fine tweezer, and then shake it until the glass falls out of the can.
Very brutal and risky way to do it. I've been lucky enough so far i haven't killed a diode in this manner.

I am sort of convinced the aberration is a scratch on the window, because I can locate it at at a shallow angle; I couldn't tell before if it was behind, on, or above the window.

The window is not loose, rock solid in fact, so the defect won't jump around. I attached some pictures of the beam when focused.

Not a significant issue in terms of collimation with the lens, since the 405-G-2 lens is just amazing (thanks DTR)!! Although there is additional scattered light due to the scratch.

Good to know that I may be able to break the window if the need arises. I'll just use it as is until then.

It is also possible that the window is "cracked" but not displaced

As long as the laser looks OK with the collimation lens in place (and focused), I wouldn't worry about it

You just have to make a decision:
Use it til it dies
Remove it, to de-can it, and risk killing it

Demounting and de-canning are not dangerous **IF** you have the correct tools
However, without the correct tools, your diode is at great risk
Also, the tools are MUCH more expensive than a new diode

To ressurect an old thread, ive just noticed a defect on a laser diode i just got into a host. Ive attached the photo. Im running a 445 diode at 800mA, and showing a defect when i leave my glass lens off, and just project the bare diode. Any thoughts?

Not sure if its visible in the upper left portion of that photo, but there is a round-ish 'wavy' looking distortion. Is that pretty normal?

You may have something very minor on the window, but it isn't central on the window.

This should not be of much concern unless it "grows"

Remove the batteries and examine the widow, with a loop, under a light
Move the diode around so you can see the light reflecting off of the surface of the window
That will tell you a lot
