I have a HUGE dilemma!

I received my 6x two days ago, and contemplated the same points. I don’t have cable as I find regular TV to be a waste of time. I download 60+ gigs per month (average) of documentaries, movies new and old, TV shows worth watching etc. Now when I opened my LG 6x box and saw the 25 gig disk it came with, I was really tempted to install it to my PC. But all of what I watch goes directly from my server PC to my TV screen via S-Video connection. I used to convert and burn all my downloads to DVD, but it’s just a waste of time. For me viewing all my movies directly from hard drive is best. Many people now are seeding torrents from bluray discs in their entirety. If you spend the money for a decent HD graphics card, and run it directly from your PC you eliminate the need for discs and burners. That’s how I justify the slaughter of my 6x anyway...

My computer can play 1080p content flawlessly (q6600 @ 3.4ghz, Radeon HD3870 vid card overclocked to 860mhz) which is why its an even tougher decision because I don't really NEED it to watch blu-ray, but I do want to burn some on disc for when I get a PS3 or some other standalone.

SOOOOO... I think I'm going to use it for a few months, get a good blu-ray collection going, and then gut it :D

Here's something else to consider. Once you do make a laser pointer out of this - the sucker is going to put out in the neighborhood of 100mW of the most dangerous-to-the-eye near UV light of any laser being built these days! So by waiting, you could be looking for some safety glasses for 405 if you don't have any. Are these glasses even available for a reasonable price?

Define "reasonable."

I got a pair from OEM that covers from 395nm - 540nm at OD3+ 8-)

That covers my Blu-Ray and my greenies (and someday my blue) for $71 (plus shipping) :)

i would say build laser, and if you really wanna watch blue-ray movies you don't need burner to do this, just buy a ps3 or something...

Nova lasershades block 405nm, 474nm, and 532nm. They don't cost too much either.

I have a nice plasma. I know that the HD is better, but I find that regular DVD movies are just fine. The picture is plenty 'crisp' for me. Eventually, you will have both. The only question is, which do you want first? The other thing to take into consideration (which I'm sure has crossed your mind), is the possibility that if you were to make a mistake during the harvest, it would be $340 bucks down the drain. Here's something that you may have seen, but a reminder could help you to decide one way or the other...

If it was me, I'd gut it :D. (I'm also happy with regular DVD's) For practical purposes, it probably makes more sense to use this one for a Blu-ray player and wait till the price comes down to buy a drive to gut. That way if anything goes wrong you don't have big regrets.

That is THE BIGGEST thing on my mind right now ;D

I just bought a kenom barrel from another member as a host for the 6x, so maybe that will make me want to tear in a bit faster.

RIP it!!!! Yeah you could have HD BR movies, BUT really its the TV that depends on the quality you get!!!!!

My TV looks absolutely flawless in 1080p. Its like looking through a window. Unfortunately it doesn't do so good with 480i, so there really is a huge difference between the two for me.

You should wait until the price goes down a bit before trying to do this unless you are absolutely sure that you won't kill it. Killing that $300 diode is all too easy.
You should use it for its intended purpose for a year or two and then buy a new one when the price comes down so you can rip apart the old one.

Wow that is cheap... Hell maybe when the next payday comes around I'll order another one. If I kill the one I rip apart, then I'm destined to wait until prices drop, and keep the remaining one as a functional unit ;D

Well... The kenom barrel I bought is in the mail, and I sent DrLava a PM about his lavadrives. So, if I sent him a PM soon enough to get one, it looks like I'll be ripping this thing apart very soon. I cant just have all the components sitting around and NOT throw it together... thats just too much of a tease. I'm going to buy a couple open can drives, rip the diodes out, and rip the ps3 sleds apart that I have here first, just to make sure I have enough practice so I don't waste $260 harvesting this thing. :D :D :D
