Just ripped open a 1000W microwave I had laying around, to find a nice suprise!

Apparently these are capable of about 2kV @ 2A on the high voltage winding, and about 2V @ 10A on the filament winding. Since I dont really feel like dying, im gonna have a play around with the HV for a bit, but then convert it to a power supply capable of about 2V, but at like 670A!!

Hehe nice find, but exactly as you said, be REALLY careful with that! Unlike simple flybacks and such the amps in that beast will fry you where you stand in a heartbeat. Take extreme precaution with it, be redundantly safe! MOTs are beasts no doubt, have fun with your project!

Thanks

Yep, I know fully about all the safety features to use these things, afterall I use a 2M wooden pole on my NST :-[ ;D

As I said, I intend to covert it anyway, so it wont be HV all the time. I just wanna have a little play with it before I convert it :)

Ahh ok ;)

Just being careful, never hurts IMO especially with MOT's. :)

Enjoy your project! HV is always fun [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Just quickly tried it out this afternoon, and DAMN those are huge arcs!! It started melting little pools into the transformer core instantly! Sadly the arcs were quite out of control, so i couldnt run it long. Also it was unballasted, so the primary got hot really fast.

throw a ballast on it and wire it up to a pair of globes or a jacobs ladder

GET A TESLA COIL.

...Put a cut grape in the microwave![/quote]

Second that.

Approved --> Passed.

Try it!

?????

PROFIT!!

mots are fun, but since I already have a 7.5KV NST, I hacked off the secondary after pulling it from my microwave

Alright so is there any SANE use for these things? Not counting the intended use of course ;D I have one of these and I used a 3 foot plastic rod to "arc" it. It made a blinding bluish fireball and instantly melted the copper wire that I had tied onto the secondary and the falling drops of molten copper melted some nice holes into the carpet >:(
Btw look at this idiot on youtube holding the secondary with needle nose pliers. I was nervous with it tied to the end of a long plastic rod. One touch=death.
