How to make beam fatter?

When I measure distance between expanding lens and point where beam is 5mm wide, that is the correct focal length of double convex lens that I need for 5mm wide beam.
As simple as that. That is all what I'm doing.

This part of green module can work as additional "beam expander" for another green module.

I tried to put this part of module in front of my O-like 150mW....and I managed to achieve amazing divergence. But it's difficult to put it in right position because beam from laser pointer must go through small expanding lens. If I could find bigger expanding lens it would be great as cheap beam expander :)

I'll try that with two double convex lenses, but I don't have any working green module at this moment.

heres a link to cheap beam expanda lens housing

Hi Renno, here's a link to Surplus Shed; www.surplusshed.com/lens.cfm]Lens F...P POWER. I think you picked up 3 REP PTs.:yh:

@ ReNNO: basically that part of the modules IS already a beam expander ..... you don't need to add one to another, if you wan to make an experiment ..... simply take away the original lens, then take a lens with a FL of 40 or 50 mm, more large of the original one, and focus the beam with it, you can see that you can acquire a better focusing point in distance (ofcourse, this also mean that the beam become more large at the exit of the lens, and the assembly requires more lenght of the original one ;)) ..... cause doing this, you simply changed the parameters of the "beam expanding" part of the module .....

It's best to get a coated lens for the wavelength you're working with. GOOD LUCK with your project..............rob

Yes, but surplusshed doesn't give any information about coating.
Maybe if I contact them they can give me more information.

There SHOULD be a contact number on the web-site. I'll bet a lot of customers have questions. rob

hmm the link didnt work. it must be because that site is down for unpayed domain overdew thingo.
i will repostt the link when they are back up.
cheers

Maybe buying some cheap 5mW laser pens from ebay just to diamantle and use for the lens could work for you.

Also, I could donate to you a couple PHR sleds with the diodes removed, I already have a ton of different lenses, so I can send you the sleds with lenses and optics still in them if you'd like ;)

@HIMNL9
Yeah, that is beam expander. But I can not disassemble O-Like 150mW module because it's glued. Only what I can do is to add additional beam expander.

are you sure ?

I just bought 5mW overspec...

Thanks for offering me sleds, but I already have PHR and LPC sleds, and I tried any lens inside.

I heard that there is no way to break glue unless you heat up module to temperature when everything inside is toasted.

^ almost correct, taking this damn thing apart, required half day of work.

I started using big pliers and multiple paper layer, heating the module few, and alternatively "forcing" it bit by bit, til the tube come off from the rest of the assembly (where there is the crystal and diode) ..... then i heated the tube part more, til i reached to take away the lens holder.

If you try to heat it too much before separate the two parts, you can end cooking the crystal, or the glue that hold the expander, this is correct ..... and also in this way it was a risk, those damn modules are glued with loctite threadblocker :p

Nice work. I would try that with 50mW module, but with 150mW it's big risk .

If I sell my 150mW green in the meantime I'll order another green module from Susie, but this time I'll tell her to not glue it.

I don't think they glue the modules ..... they look more as resellers, for them (i can be wrong with this statement, anyway ;))
