Perfume, gasoline, babies, new careers . . . . . .

When you are under about 20 you are fairly free of obligations and bills. As you finish college, get a new career, and get married (complete with new babies), your time and money are spent elsewhere. After the kids are gone and you are more established you have surplus time and money again. The majority of people in a hobby such as this (at least active in the hobby) are either young or old.
