I'm going to build a 1 Watt 405nm for burning and want it able to run long duty cycles. I know a c6 or 501b are to small and are not the best at cooling so what host do you guys recommend?
a maglite will be more than enough.
i sell maglite builds and one of my customers got a 8min run during testing at 2w with very minimal heat buildup.
your going to need a good diode heatsink, but almost just as important is the driver heatsink. with the boost drives the thermal shutoff is going to kick in if you use a free floating driver before you get even close to 5 min. the only problem with that is the thermal shutoff is desined to proect the diode . if you mount the driver on a heatsink, your basically eliminating that protection depending on how well the heatsink is doing its job, because by the time the driver gets hot enough to shutoff, the diode will be scorching! ive built about a dozen of the 1w 405nm in 501b, c11, and cypreus hosts. with a free floating driver they dont run much longer than a couple minutes before the shutoff kicks in.
so yes size of the diode heatsink is imoortant, but the driver heatsink is almost just as important if you want runs that long. my customers are getting accustomed to longer and longer runs, and its helped me be a better builder and improve many of my techniques.
ive been getting good runtimes with the c11 hosts. but i wouldnt go to 5 min. these are 3.8 diodes. the smallest we use. 5 minutes is hard on a 9mm. not matter the heatsinking i wouldnt reccomend 5 minutes unless some kind of active cooling is involed. so maybe a lab setup is the best as you said. good luck.
ive seen two of these die already, so be careful during your testing.
a zaser would be great, but youll need a dummy cell. i have a set of four zasers and one has a 1w 405. i think it would handle 5 min but i would never push it that hard. i never have the need or desire to personally. but i could understand wanting to.
