I get the following question a LOT and don't really know how to answer it:

"Oh cool, your getting a laser? What else can you do with it besides point it at stuff...Whats the point?"

I usually say something like "Oh well its fun to play with and pointing and stars is really fun, engraving your name into your stuff is also kinda fun."

But well, I'd like to see how you answer this question.

Some of the form member's like to say somethang like.
"Well if i have to tell you, you would never understand".
And more then likely they wouldn't understand anyway.
i just tell some, this.
"Because when it get's dark out, you'll never ask me why, but --> "how much and where "

good answer! The point of portable lasers is entertainment, pure and simple. That's all, and if you ask me, it doesn't have to be any more than that.

LPF is great because once you become a member you usually end up building your own portables (and lab-style systems), so you get science, electronics and entertainment value from one little item. Nothing wrong with that IMO..

off-topic@larrball: Where are you from in MO?

Well, one good reply can be:

"This"
:lasergun:

(you need a some-megawatt pointer, but, granted, you need to do it only once, none ask you a second time, after ..... :eg:

j/k :D

Larrball's answer is probably the best ... especially if it's foggy !!! I use some of my lasers for construction alignment (straight fence, etc.), some foam and plastic work, light show at a party, or just plain burning fun on tape. matches, balloons. Or, as Elektrofreak put it, educational value.

Gee... EF... after all that over at PL (Mccarott)... all you can say is...
The point of portable lasers is entertainment, pure and simple...

I also use them for entertainment on occation... but their main use is
in the shop... I use them more for LaserBee I LPM testing/verification...

They are generally cheaper than Labby types with Power supplies...
so I can buy different Wavelengths and save some money...

When asked what my Lasers are used for.... I usually respond with..
"some top secret government project... that I can't discuss"...:eg:

I figure... if they need to ask... they wouldn't understand anyway...

Im in Columbia .

If they have to ask, they don't understand.
They are unenlightened.
Sometimes, explanations are to be ignored. Why do you collect cars, plates, salt shakers, spoons etc etc. They will expire in ignorance.
