Holy cats.... I just snagged a multiline argon for $100...

It's inside the machine.

People harvest the laser from these, and the rest is generally tossed out.

Unless you're MarioMaster, then you just have a junk pile of old DNA sequencers and such.

I see the laser inside the unit but why do they have a laser in there if the output doesn't come out of the enclosure?

Lasers aren't always meant to be visible :p

Whatever the function is, just uses the laser inside the machine, and there's probably a slide out shelf of some sort, and the laser interacts with whatever is in that shelf.

Fier optic communications, and other digital applications, use IR laser diodes. Disk burners use laser diodes. You don't need to have laser output from the machine to have a use for it ;)

Yeah true, well most of those JDSU heads have massive PSUs. It looks like the PSU in that unit is relatively small. IMO its better to grab one of these and tear them down for the smaller PSU and head in one package.

Look forward to a tear down and review of this unit

Someone has bought this same unit and had some teardown walkthrough/troubleshooting so if you run into any problems google search it below

Nice snag! That eBay seller has some good laser stuff

Funny because I searched google for this unit and didnt find anything but spec sheets and the manufactures website :(

EDIT: aka provide links!!!!! Please :D

looks like mariomaster had a similar one..

Can someone drop me the schematic for the diy remote plug? I've looked and see several people have made, but I want the easy one with the single 5k pot and some jumpers, etc...

I just want to be able to quickly test this when it arrives - if it lases, I'll order the control from Meredith Instruments...

Here ya go! Sam's Laser FAQ - Complete Ar/Kr Ion Laser Power Supply Schematics

Oh and just so you know. That argon will be plug and play out of the sequencer. It will already have the right pins jumped to run in "light mode" and you will just adjust the output from the POT on the front of the PSU to adjust the output. If you want it to run in current mode you will need a controller.

Thats interesting - reading the online doc's for the laser module it does appear that it self adjusts to maintain 3mw output... so maybe I wont need the remote for testing!

Of course you won't need a remote to run them :)

As mentioned, you generally jumper the remote connector (P2) to allow you to change current with the pot on the side of the PSU.

None of my ions use remotes :p

Also, I disagree to needing a controller. You simply need to jumper the pins for current control mode. Though perhaps these are different from MG. I know for a fact that MG allows that function as I had to do it, and I've metered the current draw through two other remote pins, and got full range all the way up to 9.48A. The equation I believe was 100mV/1A, but I am not certain. It's just a matter of knowing what to jumper.

There are lists of pin layouts for various PSU remotes also on the FAQ to guide you along the way :)

Thanks for the response!

In my digging I found *the* manual... with complete details on all modes and wiring from the OEM...

http://www.junktronix.com/ebay/proddocs/JDSU 2010 Operation Manual.pdf

This breaks it down so even mechanical engineers like myself can understand the wiring.. :)

Its scheduled for delivery today!!! I wont have much time to play this evening, but will be tearing into it tomorrow night!!!

NICE FIND-- MLs rule!!

BUT -- whats up with all the double posting?? forget about all that in your excitement??

Newcomers are not expected to all know the 'rules' but without these we have chaos-

combine your posts please
unless needed bump(s) double posting is not considered proper form here.

+5 to those that helped here and to the OP if those theads get combined.

Dont make me scold you OK!

PICS-- my MLs- both at idle- hitting a very special opto 'mirror' that is also a diffraction brating and the best for seeing the lines-both throws another line at higher amp- the one I still have peaks at 145 @ 10.5 A
Sold the otther to green mechanic and delivered to him in Fla in person-
he kill his shop vac using it until he could get a proper cooling system made- BTW it needs to suck air thru the head NOT blow- better too high CFS than too little- and as some stay on 'stand-by' even after turning off= best to unplug once the fan stops- (on its own- it wil run untl, the head cools(as it should)- donot unplug whiie stock fan is still running)- should you overheat and the 'auto' shut down happens dont piss your pants until after you let it cool down COMPLETELY and see if you did any damage.

Super HELP source of experienced/seasoned pros are buds Alex (mario master) & Jeff. all questions are answered at Sam's and have been there for A VERY long time-- like since some of 'youse guys' were in kindergarden-- I may try again to get some more of the grates in the pics- daguin: "worth their weight in gold"
To make a small profit last time I needed $40-50 each for these-

there is an old FS the=read i had on these..

IF you find a LDSU 2500 or 2505 REMOTE interface inside you got one item there worth 80 to 100$
sdt

old man hak

hey!! you kids!!.. get the HELL outta my yard!!
