HeNe HV Connectors

I know what you mean by cage but it is fragile and those seals and mirror mounts just ask to be broken. If I can find a piece of rigid clear pipe (1.58" ID) --- the tube is beautiful when lit up.

I love the visual incongruity of the salmon colored plasma producing a green colored laser beam. I understand it, but still enjoy the dissonance created in the mind. Most of the people that see my lamp also remark on the color difference.

Quite honestly I did not understand it until I read posts from you guys here.

For years I had thought it was something to do with the gas mix ratios...

Hanging around here has been immensely educational in many ways.

A HeNe uses mainly He and Ne to lase but trace amounts of other gases are added to enhance operation with other colors -- green, yellow and IR. Still, it's the Ne that we see lighting up the bore in the tube.

I read that optical tuning has a large role in the output colour?

Another thread I found fascinating was LaserBen's piezo tuned laser, that was a work of art.

The dichroic coatings on the mirrors determines the resonate wavelength of the cavity but the gas mix enhanses or sometimes makes the specific color.
CO2 lasers have little CO2 in them. Most is HE, N2 plus a pinch of H2O sometimes. Newer lasers include other gases to raise efficiency of the inversion.

Interesting observation. I looked at the green tube and unlike my reds, it has a frosted glass plasma tube which seems to soften the light but it is salmon colored. I tried a 5 mW red with a clear tube and it is about the same color.
It looks like Dave's are more red in his pictures. Welllll maybe just brighter. Hmmmmmm

I finally got my ballast resistors mounted in the housing for my HeNe Green laser. 75K Ohms @ 6 watts. Arcing was a problem at first but I got it all insulated. This tube is putting out 2 mW of what I measure with my spectroscope as ~540 nM wavelength

This photo shows the black laser tube protective housing, PS and my spectroscope.
The PS supplies 6.6 mA to the tube with 13 Vdc input. If I can find a clear tube for a good price, I will remount it so the plasma can be seen.

This photo shows a comparison of a 6 mW green DPSS pointer on the left and the HeNe Green on the right. My eyes can't distinguish the difference in wavelength - So slight.
