I'm just curious, has anyone here ever met someone in real life after connecting with them online? By this, I'm talking about in-person meetings that occured solely due to online interactions. For example, adding your future roommate on Facebook before moving into the dorms doesn't count.
I can say that I've met online "acquaintances" before. But because I'm fairly concerned about the safety of doing so - mainly because some people aren't who they say they are - I generally only do it for business reasons unless that person goes to the same school as me, etc.
The first time was someone from the GIMPS forum. One of his posts indicated he was a researcher at my university, so I went to his office to say hi - but not before checking my school's directory to make sure he really worked there.
The second time, I ran into a guy from LUE2 (a spin-off of the GameFAQs forums) at a college dance. This was purely a coincidence, though.
Other than that, I've traded textbooks in person after connecting with the buyer/seller online. In addition, I've had many recruiters contact me on LinkedIn for job interviews. I think it's only going to be a matter of time before I meet them face-to-face.
