I talked on the phone with the local harbor freight and they said that they will meet any competitors online price in store for the same product. Im in the market for a lathe and I know I had previously seen a post in which someone said they had seen the 7" x 10" listed at $299.99! Right now its on sale for $499.99 on the harbor freight site. Ive seen quite a few people here get excited for lathe deals and this would be one hell of a deal considering you wont have to pay shipping for in store pickup!

Can anyone find this lathe listed for less? I considered using archive.org to find the old $299.99 listing but im not sure they would honor it. Might have to try though to find out for sure :whistle:
 





Cheapest I am seeing at the moment is the $499 though I do see that several places.

Nice euphamism. It's called stealing/theft/fraud/ripping them off/etc.

At least you should not be advertising it.

My mistake and good point. I was just thinking that if they were able to sell it at $299.99 then and make a profit im sure they still could now. Ive worked retail and I know how much of a scam prices can be especially at stores that are always having sales like harbor freight. But this does not warrant breaking the rules.

Anyone able to find it listed for a deal somewhere?
 
it goes on sale every couple months. Or go look in popular mechanics or other auto magazines, they usually have 20% off coupons
 
Just call your local harbor freight store.
They will sell it for the $499, and then they usually have some coupons at the store itself.
When i bought mine i got it listed for $499, and they gave me a $100 off coupon which made it $399

but then i bought the warranty....brought it back to just under 500.

The only bad thing i can say about it (at least ofr use in this hooby) is that it's so short. that 10" bed must fit your tailstock, the drill chuck and then your drill bit.
So when you want to bore something out, your max piece can only be a couple of inches long, because all that other crap will take up a good 6-7 inches of your max 10" space.

Everything comes loose too. all the vibrating loosens the bolts and screws that hold everything together so it needsd adjusting every once in a while.

personally, i think it's totally worth the money though.
the portable band saw for $75 at harbor freight is a must have too.
So is the 8" drill press for $75.

Think the warranty was worth it?

I didnt think about the bed length...thats a good point.

What size of stock can you comfortably run most operations in it as far as diameter and length? Im used to big southbends etc. Im still in school so I live in a rental so I dont have room for a half ton behemoth.

I know these are cheap but I only plan on machining aluminum and mild steel. Do the coupons apply to sale prices? I really want to try to keep it under $600 with basic tooling and supplies

Ive got a drill press and all sorts of other hand and power tools.

i would advise you check your local adds and craigslist for
9" x 20" Geared Head, Belt Driven Bench Lathe - Stationary Milling & Drilling - Garage & Shop
I bought this for under 500$ used and i am way happier than any mini lathe.
It is very sturdy and super fast at making heatsinks.
The smaller lathes are still good but if you can find one for almost the same money should get it.
check as much as you can they are much better, the motors can handle alot more.
 
Grizzly's lathes are made by the same company that makes the HF lathes. They're called Sieg and they're based in China.

Almost all of the mini lathes you find out there (and most mini-mills too) are made by Sieg.
 
Im debating spending $600-1000 on a bigger chinese lathe or just looking for a used high quality old american lathe...

Any advice here?
