Halo Style 2 stage COILGUN

Get a lotta SCRS. I use the MCR265-10 (10 = 1000v, you can get the 265-6 for 400v caps) and it works like a charm. They are the to-220 packaging and don't heat with a 200v discharge/pulse. 55A max, IIRC 110A peak max?

Expanding gases? Not really ;-) Both ends are open wide ^^

I would try to get some 25A 400V SCRs...easy to get and cheap. Several soldered together to a small package...should do it.

Wow expensive uh? At this price I can send you some that I bought here (55A 800v, around $2.50) plus shipping.. it would be more cheaper than 3 or 4 of yours. lol!

I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Well, I wanted to get it working quickly so it was the price of convenience this time. This retailer was low on stock for many items in the SCR category. They had "one" 400V 25A, "two" 200V 25A and "one" 1200V 80A. The 1200V 80A was extremely overpriced at $51.00. The 400V 25A was $5.60 and wouldn't have done the job, so I chose the 800V 35A. This is a place that I usually don't buy parts from because of the price gouging for "NTE" equivalent parts. But this time I decided to get the project moving quickly.

$51? lol.

You can always stack they in parallel, for 80~90% efficiency, can't you? :)

Here is what Digi-Key returned for my price.

Digi-Key Part Number S4065KTP-ND
Price Break - 250
Unit Price - 5.67632
Extended Price - 1419.08

Ok, I just hope that the 800V 35A SCR that I purchased works(1150uF and ~300V for the 2nd stage). I have to delay its construction until tomorrow. I also got some 270R resistors 1W. I hope to have a working 2 stage tomorrow night. I'll also get some diodes for the circuit tomorrow.

0.5W would be enough...hasnt to be 1Watts...

The SCRs should work...might be able to take 500A for a ms ;-)

I'm thinking I'll try the 800V 35A (300A peak) SCR, running by itself for the 2nd stage. If it is too much, I'm expecting the SCR to smoke trying to keep up with the current flow. Otherwise the SCR "might" be able to flow enough amps. This is an experimental 2nd stage and may or may not work. ;-)

I am completely in the dark, as to how I would calculate the peak current for the 2nd stage. But if there is an easy formula for that I could calculate it. Even an estimate would be helpful.
