Halo Style 2 stage COILGUN

Well, I worked fast but couldn't quite get to the testing phase until tomorrow. I installed the "trigger" leads for the 2nd stage into the barrel. Then I ohmed the leads using my .25 inch mild steel rod inserted into the barrel and found continuity for both leads. ^^ Then I checked to make sure the contacts were not shorted with the DVM and it looks good. :) Getting close to the 2 stage, first test.

Edit: OT, but would anyone try this circuit to energize their brain. ;-)

Leo: Will you make one yourself? "Get one" sounds more like buying....
If you want serious power, you could buy a car-inverter. 12VDC -> 230VAC...a few diodes...250W and more.
 
You will get 230VAC.......you can use a transformer...you could use a fitting one and wire it output-in.

Wont get easier than that man. Try learn some stuff about transformers...
 
Oh yeah, right! I forgot about the transformer.
Anyways, a 60W car inverter costs about $60 here, and a full ZVS would cost around $3 (except mosfets and PCB, that I already have). Dunno what to do :thinking:
 
Depends on you.
Always easier to buy. Some ZVS wont work right away...some parts might be not right or damaged...to weak...whatever...so....your decision.

EDIT: My advice? Start simpler....lower wattage...400W is too dangerous anyway. You cant fire one shot per sec, no matter what, so why so much output?
100W would be just right...trust me.
 
No matter what you do in the end, keep it simple.
You will have same power in the end, so why increase effort when it comes to charging?
 
Because some day I could change the caps for bigger ones and have more power :eg: but with the same charger.

You would have to make new coils and might have to increase the size of the projectile as well. So....dont worry about what COULD be SOMEDAY!
 
Well, I wanted to test the 2 stage to see if it even worked at all. I haven't made a video though because it needed to work repeatedly first. So I fired the shot into a cushion and it apparently had much more energy than just a single stage from the incredibly strong impact and bounce. Unfortunately there was a beautiful spark that came out of the barrel with the projectile. So when I charged the second time and fired again, the 2nd stage didn't discharge. This of course is because my wire leads inside the barrel burned off. ^^ So I'm looking for some ideas on how I can have the leads survive the discharge. ;-)

Please tell me you didnt push the pulse throught the projectile!? Did you use the projectile as a switch between coil and cap??

You have to connect the gate of the 2. SCR to the first contact, and the other to the charged cap-bank (stage 2) using an 270R resistor!
 
Yes, you are correct! I used the projectile as a switch between the coil and cap. I was in a hurry to get results. Apparently the only damage is the destroyed wire contacts inside the barrel. I'll get a couple of SCR's tomorrow and try again. It was incredibly powerful, but of course a very risky way to achieve a 2nd stage, now that I know what to do. :)

Edit: Besides a reduced capacitance in the second stage to get a shorter pulse, I wound a shorter 5/8" coil with only 4 layers so I also reduced inductance to shorten the pulse. That was a powerful short pulse and should work well with the SCR.

xD oh my god....I hate when things just explode. Could tear apart your barrel as well.
Speaking of barrels...what material do you use? Metal wouldnt work...with metal contacts reaching into ;-) know what I mean?

Get some SCRs...usually they can take alot of current. I like using more than I need to be on the save side.
 
I used an epoxy barrel ~6mm ID and ~8mm OD. I wish I created a video of the firing of this incorrectly implemented design. I think it was an even more powerful projectile because of the burning wire contacts. Possibly expanding gas? ;-)

Edit: do you have a minimum rating for the SCR and some part numbers?
