Good host for 3w 9mm laser build

I'm having a rough time trying to choose a good host and heatsink combo for a 3w, 445nm, 9mm laser diode that will run off of 2 18350 LiMn batteries. What is a good choice with a large heatsink at a fair price (around $50)?

Here's the diode, module, and driver combo I'm going with (it's the $120 option):

Here's one host I was looking at but the heatsink seemed a tad small for 3w:

Any help would be great.

the combo you've shown sound good...
depend on how long you want to run the laser for?

I want to be able to keep the laser on for 3-5 minutes max before needing it to cool down. Ideally the cool down time would be short as well.

That host looks nice and sturdy, I think it will dissipate the heat nicely. Just keep an eye on the duty cycle :yh:

3-5 min Is possible, only in cold areas. Your laser is STainless Steel so it has bad heat conductivity. But that copper heatsink might do it.

Thanks,

My SL S4 aluminum host with extended and tapered heatsink can run 5 min no problem, the diode is a 9mm NDG700 520 diode though.

So for looks, SS host. (One your looking at right now.)
Better runtimes (S4 host with extended and tapered heatsink)
They are all on sale on the Survival laser website.

That little host will be way too hot in 5 minutes, it will be hot in 3 minutes.
I run mine for 5 minutes and I use a lot of surface area to do it.

Send a personal message to Ehgemus, he will make you a good host and all you do is connect 2 wires. Just look at what he makes below, his are thick solid hosts and he can make what you want for a very fair price.

Hi,
Red is correct that host is to small for a 9mm diode, and the duty cycle you want to run it at is to long. It will get hot fast,Yes again to Red Ehgmus is a good choice . PM him with your information of what you want to do. Or for a little more money do a Jrob 2-cell mag light host thats a long duty cycle piece of metal. I my self mod my Mag lights and just get the sinks made for me. As the famous Ed Crouse said duty time less than 5 minutes are unacceptable . Man he was good i miss him.

The S4X host looks beefy and it is in the same price range. Could this do the job for a build like yours?

Yes that host is great but it's small for that much power, I have one, see what I did here:

I limit mine to about 35 seconds, if you want to run that for 3 - 5 minutes then you are going to need a really big laser or some active cooling, and be careful what you point it at, it can be a fire hazard.

Alan

Yeah I ended up ordering a custom one from Ehgemus, it has a nice big heatsink and lasts for about 2 minutes on 2 minutes off.
