Im leaving wednesday for the final launch of the space shuttle. Im sure a good number of you have seen a launch, and was wondering if you had any tips on things like viewing location, how early to get to the spot, favorite cheap hotels.... Any help is much appreciated.
I'm pretty damn excited!

I have one question the last 2 shuttle launches NASA said was the last.
now I'm hearing there doing another.
so is this because its the last for each shuttle or do they keep just doing one more

I would love to got to that. My brother and I just made the 5 hour drive to the Kansas Cosmosphere a couple weeks ago. It was amazing!

Then we went to a psychiatric museum & stopped by jesse james' house in st. joseph.

On the 11th we're going to the WW1 museum in Kansas city. It's fun to plan little adventures and road trips. I wish we had started doing it sooner.

Lazerman, there is more than one shuttle. The past few launches have been the last for discovery and endeavor. This one on the 8th is atlantis. All the shuttles have been sold to museums/observatories.
Matt, Thats awesome! My brother and I have started doing the same. We are driving to socal in august. I cant wait to drive through the desert!

I wanna go see the zanthium launch! That's the autobots shuttles name

The new transformers movie is so unbelievably awesome!

I looked for it outside of work this morning. It was too cloudy to see anything :(

haha, i saw it in IMAX 3d. but I didn't get any sleep cause i worked the day before so i fell asleep towards the end. I kept waking up and getting freaked out cause I didn't know exactly where i was right when i'd wake up. I'd just wake up, and there be loud fight scenes in 3D in front of me.

Glad you got to go!

I had the opportunity to watch STS-131 launch last year. It was seriously awesome, especially since it was the last one in the dark(about 20 minutes before sunrise). This is one of the pics I took:

Just saw this thread....wanted to quote just to show the photo again.
Very nicely taken, hope you don't mind, it will be my desktop pic for a bit. :D

PS...space research and travel is worth the money spent. Instead of mining our beautiful blue marble we should be looking at that huge belt at the edge of our galaxy.

what is that thing falling downward in the picture

That's the shuttle going upwards and away, more away than up at this point. Its about 5 minutes in to the mission and with about three minutes left on the burn to reach orbit.
