i was curious what kind of protection your going to get for >500 dollars
the goggle model here seems pretty safe for most of my uses

these seem to be quite safe but i really like my vision and should have some lasers in the works that could take that away from me so i am always curious about more protective gear for my/anyone elses eyes.
 
The goggles in that link are fine for nearly everything. If you need goggles over $500 you have huge lasers like multiple joule pulsed yag or CO2 or tens to hunderd of watts CW. Of course the beam size also plays, these powers at smaller mean sizes are even more destructive.

I still think we need some definitive tests on exactly the % of IR from cheap greens.
I was under the impression that it was never much more than 25-30% IR. Some are claiming 75% IR, 25% green, which I don't agree with at all. :tsk:

I've got a federal government test pdf some place showing 30% 1064, fairly well collimated, and some 808 leakage. Its from NIST, so its hard to argue with it. Cheaper lasers (30$) leak more. With 20 or 30 plants making these things, its impossible to run a comprehensive test, not to mention the fact that most silicon detectors do not see 1064, making it hard to determine if its milliwatts, microwatts, or not there at all. You really need a InSb or GE or other mid IR detector ($$$$$$$)

If you want protection from green dpss, you need to get some goggles that block both 532, 808 and 1064. The exact amount of IR leakage varies wildly between lasers, and so does the pattern it comes out.

Typically it isnt as collimated as the green (especially the 808 is not), but there is just no way to be absolutely certain without measuring each type of laser individually. The 1064 should be fairly well collimated with the 532, since the doubling is usually done intra-cavity, but as long as the laser lights up green there cannot be that much 1064 leakage... it would simply stop the crystal from lasing and the set from producing any green if there were.
