Geminids Peak @ 0500 UT on the 14th






That's 10 PM for me here. I live in a small town and for years, I have watched these "showers" and I see maybe 2 or 3 per hour. I have driven out into the country and still almost nothing to see. Are the 100 per hour the size of a dried pea?

ZHR the astronomer's rate for metor showers, is with some ifs. I means Zenith hourly rate, and assumes you see every meteor (grater than magnitude 6), that the shower radiant is exactly overhead (zenith), and that there are no obstructions in the sky , clouds trees mountains, fog etc. so, I usually see near 1/2 the ZHR in most cases in a clear sky away from city lights. -Glenn

You have to get your "night vision" on Mike, but i'm sure you know this. Just keep your eyes away from ANY kind of bright light for at least a half of an hour and you should be good to go.

The slight glow from my Cgar should not pose night vision problems.:D
Nor should the light from a small community spread around this small lake.

The biggest problem is IOWA, all we get here is clouds, haze, snow and fog. :can:

Cool...should look good from the beach. I'll have to dress in my "burnt marshmallow" coat. Yeah I know.. but is warm so

Mike,

Your cigar is more towards the eye friendly side of the spectrum so it should not be a problem.

OTOH the clouds and haze just might be a small inconvience. :crackup:

Don't "stand." Lie down. You don't really want the horizon as part of your field of view.

The problem with viewing a meteor shower alone is that there is no one to wake you up again!

Yeah plus at my time that 11PM, anyone want to figure out in which direction I should look if I am in Baltimore???
 
The clouds and rain stoped at about 5AM for me. I saw one large and a pile of small meteorites. I tried to hang out and watch the sun rise, but it was too crispy. The sand was crunchy LOL.
