The debt wouldn't just disappear, they'd go after you if the sum was substantial (and probably would even if it wasn't).

I like it for the fact that I can check out a product and make sure it's not actually a box of bricks before PP takes the money. Not sure in the long run it makes any difference, but it does come in handy.

This is certainly not for your convenience. I'm betting they're doing that so that they don't have to pay the fees of reverting a charge in case the deal goes bad. It's why they try to make you pay through a bank account rather than a credit card. I like the protection of the credit card companies though, and the less money I can give to Paypal the better.
