Mine was also home made, I have 3 turbopumps (2 unknown contition, 1 verified broken) and 0 controllers ;)

A turbomolecular vacuum pump is used after a roughing pump. Usually a two stage rotary vane vacuum pump goes to ~10^-3mbar after which the turbopump goes down to 10^-9 mbar in a good vacuum system.
It's basically some sort of turbine spinning at an insane speed, the smaller ones operate at 1khz, or 60000 rpm. At low pressures gas doesn't flow anymore, it's like playing pingpong with the particles which requires the high rotation speed.

Wow, makes total sense, and yet it is still mind-boggling. Never would have thought about that! Thanks for sharing, Blue!

ekeup, is that an old computer of some kind? Forgot, it's been a while since I had computer history, is it a Pascal or Babbage machine?
