Every viasho hand held laser or RPL that I have seen does not have an IR filter, per se. That being said, the cavity and optics are designed such that no stray IR really has any way out. With blue you are dealing with quite a bit more pump power, so it is possble for a tiny bit to escape even with the good cavity design.

Yobresol, can you take a couple pictures of the laser with the heatsink unscrewed? I'm just curious to see how they mounted the crystals in that particular laser. Thanks!
 





Yeah I have no problem doing that. I will be away from my laser for a day or so but when I return to it I will. As a note about IR I can clearly see red IR light inside the head of the laser when I peer into the apature. Also when the head is unscrewed the red can be seen shining through into the focuing lens that sits atop the laser module.
 
What you're saying could be possible but I don't see it happening that soon. I don't know why the seller didn't test this with an IR filter before..
 
I'm trying to figure out why an IR filter on the RPL drops the mW considerably, but when the same filter is put on another higher mW unit its only a few mW loss. The only thing I can see is that the RPL has a higher mW pump. This also explains the quick heat up, power drop and battery draw. The heat sink is also glued instead of screwed, and the rarity of the unit looks in my layman eyes like they were doing an experiment. The OP said Jack didn't want to sell it. Again I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm just giving an outside of the box sugestion. It answers a lot of questions. I just don't know if it is possible or not,

It's simply because this unit has a higher IR leakage. This is why it reads >70mW on an LPM but 30mW with an IR filter. Another unit may output more 473nm than IR so it could lose less power with the IR filter on.

Could be. Look at the facts, these lasers are rated between 5 and 30mW. Getting 70mW out of one of them is a miracle. It can happen but it's not very likely. If at first it was really outputting 70mW of pure 473nm then I'd suggest sending the laser to have its crystals realigned.

sorry i've not been keeping tabs lately on this forum been busy with work etc, just logged in now first time in weeks.
im really sorry to hear about the problems your having with this RPL. when i had the laser, i was unaware about the whole IR filter issue, having bought from opto on numerous occasions in the past, i had to go by Jack's measurements as upon receiving the laser, i had no means of output measurement only Jack's word.
regarding the power drop-out.. to be honest it never actually hit me the way you've experienced it however i did notice that after around 5 minutes of use the beam would not appear as bright as it did compared to a fully charged battery but i always thought of this as part and parcel of the laser with it being such a high powered unit.
i knew that this laser had to be used in short cycles and needed cooling every so often to maintain its high output.
again, im sorry about the experience you had and by no means did i try to conn you.
have you got in touch with Jack? im sure he will do whatever it takes to help you out.

Thanks, I might send it to Jack for testing and possibly trade it in for an RPL. I love those new green RPLs.

Are you serious? The RPL greens do not have an IR filter?!
 
If anyone want this laser they can have it for $650 shipped in US with charger, battery, and case.
 
no freaking way Jack sold this a few months ago for 1500 bucks
then you scored it cheap, handheld blues with cw have a short duty cycle mine is like 4 minutes tops i wish i would have bought this one -wanna trade hmmmmmm
 
I'm open to trades. If someone paid $1500 for this laser they got ripped off. I paid a more reasonable price but honestly the reason I am selling it now for $650 is because that is what I feel it is worth.
