Oh...you must be talking about the little metal finger grip focussing ring. I bought a 10 pack of modules from AixiZ, and they didn't send those front pieces. The plastic lens holder is still focusable, so it doesn't take away from the functionality. But it just looks better with the finger grip piece. Easier to focus too. And, allows the use of a tail cap dust cover. I had to buy some from Stonetek. You'll have to ask around to see if anybody has extra...

Hey Jay, I REALLY need some tips for soldering wires to the small leads of the laser diode. I just kill my last diode because when I soldered the capacitor to the diode and then powered it up, the connection came loose, which charged the cap, and then the cap touched the diode pin again frying it. >:( Do you have any suggestions on what type of solder to use or at what heat to solder at?

PS: My diode fried before I could take pictures of it on and assembled, but once I get a new diode I will take some pictures! :)

This is one reason why you have seen many of my drivers built with the silicon diode and cap, right on the MXDL board. Soldering to the LD is kind of tricky. I like to just solder some wire leads to the LD. It's easier. You just have to make sure you discharge the cap, before connecting the driver leads to the LD leads. I have tried silver solder, but I like rosin core solder better, because it's easier. The main thing, is that your tip is clean. Pre-solder the wire too. Then, load the tip of the iron with a little solder, just before you need it. Then clean the tip again, before the next time...

Im on hold until DDL get the blu's sent out, I really hope I don't kill the blu-ray :-/

something tells me a lot of my friends will want a blu-ray laser, after seeing the MXDL...

All I can say amk, is it will be worth the wait! Here's a beam comparison between my two blu-rays. Smoke machine, so you can see the beams...even with sunlight beaming through the garage door windows! One is 16.7mW's (PS3), and the other is my 2 X writer build. (63mW's) I have my 6 X drive on the way...

All I can say amk, is it will be worth the wait! Here's a beam comparison between my two blu-rays. nice man! I can see you've got quite the sanctuary going on over there ;D ;D ;D workshop with lathe, welding machine, etc, PLUS your own little workout area!

I like the lasers, although I hear you cant get the true color on a picture! I cant wait to see for myself!

I just got the 10440's, 2 questions:

1. I have the trustfure all in one charger, that will cut off at 4.1v right? so I don't have to worry about overcharge?
2. If the batteries get to low voltage in the flashlight, will they vent and go boom? how do you suggest I prevent this?

That picture shows about as true a color as it is! That picture is just like standing there!

I don't have that charger but I'm sure that, if it is made for those batteries, it will be fine. If this is it:

Then, your going to be fine with that. There should be an LED light that would be red while charging, then turn green at full charge. But again, it would have to be a charger made specifically for 3.6 volt lithium.

As far as the batteries getting too low. You will have to take them out once in a while and check them with a volt meter. Or just charge them. They should last at least 2 or 3 times longer than the Red burner MXDL builds. Because you have higher overall capacity, and much less draw with a blu-ray build using 3 X 10440 batteries. With that said, I'm not too worried about it.

About the AMC driver. I'm sure you could do that. Solder a coil spring onto the outer ring of the driver, flip the batteries. But either way, the host is going to be negative, or positive. That is, with the MXDL hosts we are discussing. It is because of the switch set up. The tail cap switch, is using the body of the MXDL, as the contact. So, you would still have to isolate the diode from the body of the host. At least that's how I see it in my head. I haven't tried it though...

No, but since the diode's case is negative, you couldn't let it touch positive...

P.S. I tried an open can at 350mA's and wasn't happy. I can get 200mW's out of a Senkat diode at 294mA's. (acrylic lens) I'm sure that the diode would last much longer at 350mA's though. Why not just build a DDL driver with a 3.3 ohm resistor? That would give you about 380mA's. Or, you could go with a 3.6 ohm, for about 350mA's.

I sent it out on Monday, 3/10/08. I'm sure it will show up. It's probably just a slow trip from No. CA, U.S., all the way to England. I would have guessed it would have been there by now. Sometimes the mail system has a little glitch. Not sure if customs slows it down or what. But I do have to fill out a customs slip when I send one out of the country. Keep me informed...

oh BTW, I forgot to tell you guys: my MXDL open can (with jayrob heatsink) was putting out only 130mW before!! with 140mW peak!!

after going from cheap ebay primaries to DX 3.6v rechargeables, I now get readings of 250mW, with 260mW peak! I think the MXDL resistor was a but more than 3ohms, and I am not getting the full 416mA to the diode. anyhow, 250 is awesome!!
