DragonLasers 589's Spartans are a hit or miss. A lot of members have received good over-spec unit, but 2 have received very poor and well under-spec units so it might a gamble. For $400+ I personally wouldn't take such a risk so if you can look elsewhere.

A few things here, Alex

I personally wouldn't say 2 bad ones out of ? number of Spartans (quite a lot) is "hit or miss". One of those bad ones was also from a substantial amount of time ago. There is a theory floating around that these are binned CNI units, which may be a possibility. I also have my own theory that these are the same "30mW" units that DL used to list on their website, when they changed it to 50mW realising almost every one was at least that. Soon they may change it to 80mW, who knows. I reckon it is the same device and if they'd kept it listed at 30mW technically none of them would have been underspec I think?

As for taking a risk, if you use any half decent credit card company you should never have to worry about that. Certainly over here in the UK it's actually enshrined in law, known as section 75 of the consumer credit act I think it is, that you can get your money back if you paid for an item over £100 and it is shown to be faulty or not of merchantable quality. Some CC companies squirm more than others though and this is why I have no qualms at paying a small annual fee to my CC company, said company is rather well known for giving companies who try to fob the customer off a good seeing to, as it were.

I do think it's a bit of a shame that these DL 589s seem to have such a bad rep (mostly from those that don't own one, it seems ) the vast majority of them have shown to be excellent units and mine is certainly as stable as my DPSS greens. Granted, DL have shown to be a little less than honest in the rare case of faulty units, but I suspect it would be A-ok had they kept them rated at 30mW. Still, it's hardly deserving of WL-like reputation, IMO, and i'd still rather pay what DL ask for theirs than pay the same for a LaserGlow cat toy.

I agree with trech and for the record have specifically said that I don't have a problem with their products as I do not own any and have heard mostly good things from those that do. However my problem comes from how they've handled under spec lasers in the past and really screwed over some people. Also Adams dick-ish nature and the fact that he will not stand behind their advertise power rating to me is unacceptable but it's not a company I would do business with because of.

Well, in theory you could. If you have a relative/contact in say, Canada, you could ship it to them, have them replace the label, pay them for shipping to you, and get all the >5mw lasers you want.

Huh, maybe that could be a job of mine in the future...

Agreed! LaserGlow does charge a lot which is why I have decided to switch over to CNI to restart my collection. They offer some units LG dosent offer & have found their customer service is quite better then LG's(in my opinion).

The only thing I'm really worried about is how stable CNI handhelds are when compared to LG's quality tested pointers which I have found to be amazingly stable in any temperature!!
