Finally! PT-54 Flashlight

I'm using a butane powered soldering pen which may not be getting hot enough then.

SpyderFire, what butane soldering iron are you using? Do you know what Watt it is rated to? My new soldering iron is butane and it is variable from 30 - 185 watts.

I'm using a cheapie (not cheap enough) from radio shack. Don't know the equivalent wattage off the top.

Edit: found this

50-watt equivalent iron provides up to 30 minutes of continuous use at mid setting
Refills quickly with standard cigarette-lighter butane (not included)
Adjustable flame has a heating range as low as 30-watt and as high as 70-watt electric irons

I'll retry but with the flame on high

the trick is definitely to tin the parts first. It's much easier to get solder to stick to solder than to get solder to stick to cold metal. And make sure the LED isn't on a heatsink while you solder to it. It will make it harder to solder properly.
