Feeler: Mercury GB

Well, the more dangerous way that i've found in all my experiments for use mercury, is modifying some .40 bullets with mercury in a frontal cave, sealing them with thermoplastic, then shooting them in dummy targets ..... at regular loading, you need both your hand just for keep the gun in place, and the effect on the water-filled dummy targets is good enough :p

Using it for get mercry fulminate is, imho, a waste ..... too few result for all the efforts you need for get some pure product ..... funny as experiment, but not for mass production ..... and i still prefer magnesium powder for my "flash and loud" experiments :p :D

Have to admit, anyway, that it's a funny material ;)
 





How much volume could you fill with 2oz. of mercury?


2oz = 56.7 grams

density (L) = 13.534 g/cm^3


so: d = m/v

13,534 g/cm^3 = 56,7g/v

v = 4,18cm^3


Rounding up it's about 5cm^3 of mercury in 2 ounces, so be aware that it's not "much" if you're planning to play with it in a big container.
 
Yeah, the stuff is amazingly dense... a coffee cup of it weighs in at over a kilogram. It is disappointing if you would order an ounce of it, expecting to receive something the size of an ounce of water... which then turns out to be 2 ml.
 
If anyone is interested, I am willing to trade a Visene bottle(15ml.) for 2 cubic centimeters of gallium, or sell it for $20 plus shipping.
 
when I bought mercury befor (I may still have a couple bottles around) it came in a plastic dipped glass bottle with a small screw mouth. that was inside a tin can that had a twist key to open the can. the mercury weight was 10 Lb's the bottle was about 4" high and 3" in dia. this was in a wooden box with horse hair packing. and also about 20 years ago. I wish you good luck on distrubiting this material today ! have fun be safe !
There is absolutely nothing like mercury. Alloys that are liquid at or near room temperatures exist, but they don't behalve like mercury. You can see them as an alternative if the single property you are interested in, is being a liquid metal.

You could, for example, never make a tilt switch with those alloys, they'd just stick to the container and short the whole thing out on the first activation.

Seriously, an approved steel container would suffice, but wouldnt be very practical to send to everyone in a group buy. In terms of hazmat it is considered corrosive (not toxic).
