Just to throw this out there for you guys. When cutting the blocks with cutting wheels or anything that is going to throw a lot of metal dust in the air suggest wearing a breathing filter. I was told that the material they make these blocks out may be really bad if inhaled. Can't remember what they said it was. Looks like brass which is bad as well but this is a brittle metal of some kind which as you may have noticed does not bend or deform it cracks.;)
 
Thanks. I didn't even consider that, but I will now. It's definitely a mysterious blend of metals.
 
what about the ones that still works? do they stick?

If it's a usb scope they get a good close image, you can hold the diode near the scope lens and really get a good close up.

Also a basic 10x jewelers loupe will work well, I have a 10x 20x and 30x from flebay that work great.

All my dead diodes stick to a magnet, the backing seems to be ferrous.

One is very recent so I don't think they have changed, all my others are in units or pressed in modules, I have some old 5.6mm but they are not relevant.

Check out how even this snapped off there! This was by doing what you said RC, I made a cut directly below the diodes bottom, stuck my regular screwdriver in the slot, and turned. And this is how it came out, I don't think solder would equally snap like that with little force. (Yes I cut into the diode a bit, but I doubt it will hurt it since it never got up more than 90 degrees, I have a thermometer gun on it after every cut.)

Shoot I would run that diode, no problem, I can cut out a little copper disc with pin holes to accept the wired pins in heat shrink and sandwich it the module, or use it like it is.

With practice we will make a rip down each side a sawblade wide " 1/8 " and as deep as the diode plate edge at the bond line and pop pop pop them out.

If the whole block needs to come apart I have planned a map, the 4 corners first, it can be done with a vise and a hacksaw, but the windows must be covered ;)

Yup and if that doesn't work, go in from the bottom up to where the end of the side cut is and the whole bottom corner will fall off, leaving half a diode bottom to push from.

Have you cut into your new block yet?
 
Yes I have have. And I'm already reaching that point where I'm considering a sledge hammer as viable option. I'm taking a little break and will get back at it. But honestly I know they don't want use getting these out but it was a real sadistic bastard who designed these.
I'm exaggerating but it is a lot of work and tedious. But if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
I actually am trying a new approach. Imy using my drill press with a pretty small bit. I drilled all the way around it. It's Pretty Easy To Drill Through amd doesnt Create Much Heat At all. So now I have the first one out but it's got a little more left on the bottom to remove. I'll keep you updated.
