If it's a usb scope they get a good close image, you can hold the diode near the scope lens and really get a good close up.
Also a basic 10x jewelers loupe will work well, I have a 10x 20x and 30x from flebay that work great.
All my dead diodes stick to a magnet, the backing seems to be ferrous.
Just to throw this out there for you guys. When cutting the blocks with cutting wheels or anything that is going to throw a lot of metal dust in the air suggest wearing a breathing filter. I was told that the material they make these blocks out may be really bad if inhaled. Can't remember what they said it was. Looks like brass which is bad as well but this is a brittle metal of some kind which as you may have noticed does not bend or deform it cracks.
