EFFORT for KipKay Flagging on YouTube

You can, but you can also go around punching people you don't like in the face. But I advise against it hehe.

Flagging something that's unsafe is one thing.. but doing it just because you don't like the creator I think is another.. I'm a firm believer in karma.. and lets just say she's not the nicest lady around..

I love Karma, shes like my best friend, in fact she is the one who suggested to me to make the thread.....

Can't we just do it because hes annoying?

Well, thats entirely up to you :)

Kipkay may come up with dubious safety considerations and downright foolish desings (such as the direct-drive mini mag), but on the other hand, i do believe he kindles interest in building lasers as a hobby too.

I have no stats at all, but i could imagine a fair number of members here actually got here because they tried some kipkay project that failed after 2 minutes, and then went to figure out what they did wrong.

Bah I understand but you can't deny you think hes annoying as well. I'm sure there a lot of real members of LPF who have posted 100X's better video's and the down fall of KipGay wont hurt anything......

Oh sure, but just being annoying isn't a crime, is it?

As far as i'm concerned he just caters to a specific audience that might otherwise have never heard of the option of bulding a laser from a dvd drive. That in itself is a gain, although with kipkay it comes at the price of at least a diode (and hopefully not an eye!).

well my thinking is that.. he is designing and selling parts on his personal website on how to build a potential harmful object, prohibited on the USA. Thats enough, FDA would take care of him. just continue flagging...

+1 for kipgay :P

You do realize that's no different than anybody here selling laser parts right?

As long as they aren't complete lasers, there is nothing illegal or regulated about it.. Neither is building them yourself. If the FDA enacts new regulation takes down kipkay for selling laser parts and how to build them.. you can rest assured that they will also go after anyone else they find selling laser parts as well.. Meaning an end of DIY as well as this forum... which exists to help people build DIY lasers for the most part.

Though I have to comment on your project list Leo. heh
#1 - fairly easy circuit to build using simple opamps as comparators
#3 - Some might argue, but I wouldn't call microboosts and flexdrives expensive.. There are plenty of costlier drivers out there.. and on the flipside your not going to get much cheaper than linear drivers that are available either unless you want to lose money making them.
#4 - I think your probably stretching a bit with that output power WITH corrective optics.. using only a single 18650. Even using LiFePo4's which would be needed to handle the current draw, you'd have crappy run times.. providing the current casio diodes we have could even do 2.5W reliably for any length of time.. which is what you'd need at least to hit 2.3W after the optics.

It's not illegal to build a "potentially harmful" laser.
It's not illegal or "unsafe" to "pot mod" a laser.
The FDA is only concerned with imported contraband.

As far as I'm concerned kipkay is doing nothing wrong. He is annoying and a WL sell-out.
What will flagging his videos accomplish anyway?
It's not going to get any attention from legislators. YouTube won't shut down kipkay who is raking in the $$$ with all the hits his channel gets.

SO, if anything, by going onto his channel and flagging his video, you are only contributing to the millions of views that they want.

I think at this point we can stop worrying about the future of the hobby being ruined by irresponsible and misinformed teens. The ban already exists, it is just not enforced - yet.
If the import ban in the USA is enforced, it won't affect my life.
My hobby is building lasers, not importing illegal lasers assembled by someone else (well... sometimes I might do that). ;)

This thread is full of fail

Ashamed to admit i come under this category, although i didn't kill a diode. I saw another video explaining why direct driving was a bad idea, and noticed that 200mW reds on DX were selling for less than the total build cost of the Kipkay burning reds. Then i found Styropyro and ended up here.

...and then i learnt the truth about Kipkay...

If you're going to report him for dangerous acts, do it to the laser lighter video. That one is genuinely dangerous, whereas the pot mod one isn't.

Also, report his barbie doll camera one as sexual & innappropriate

Honestly, despite possible unsafe or diode-killing tequniques, alot of the laser videos I've seen of his do mention or tag (if not in the video then in the description) about some kind of laser safety. Most other laser videos on youtube, even some from respected members here, don't mention anything about laser safety.

Personally, I don't see the big deal. So he's a mass murderer of diodes, oh well.
I think he gets alot of new people interested in our hobby.

I disagree.
This site at least makes an attempt to encourage the use of safety glasses. And although not everyone on this site is responsible as some of us, efforts with stickies have been made to prevent this happening as far as possible.
It is clear that kipkay does not promote much safety and contradicts himself:

Do not point laser at yourself or any living thing.
As this line is being said, the guy is pointing it just below his eye and he clearly has no safety glasses. I would say that encouraging people to light cigarettes with it is promoting dangerous party tricks, and includes shining a laser very close to your face due to the angle of the tobacco from the front. (I can imagine a whole lot of very drunk kids showing off about this cool lighter, someone snatches it away and it goes into someones eye --pop--)
If he is encouraging thousands of people to shine a laser at their face while lighting a cigarette with absolutely no experience with lasers, IMO he needs to be stopped.

Yes, but we can assume that [hopefully] they have been subjeceted to at least one of the stickies or many safety warnings all over the site and in people's sigs. (This is assuming the person is only here to buy something and is totally new.) And I doubt he would have stumbled onto one of these video's as they generally are not tagged to attract public views and have negligible views compared to kip.

Basically I think there is a big difference between what he is doing on youtube for tens of thousands of viewers (many in their early teens) with no background knowledge and what is being done on a site that promotes safety glasses and makes pleas for eye safety.

I am sorry if I went off a little but I really think what he is doing is very dangerous.

I flagged it because it felt (to me) like it was a "do it as cheap as you can get away with" how to video.
Kids aren't going to look at the laser, then look at the goggles and say "oh, I could get a laser and goggles instead of 2 lasers"
The comments display a nearly uniform lack of understanding (and in some cases a scary level of stupidity).
Stronger laser? That must mean that it will screw up the teacher that I hate! YAAY!
Apart from a global cleansing of these throw away children it will become more and more necessary to protect society in general from their stupidity.
I don't believe in not being responsible for one's own actions but this kind of thing is like a kid with a blowgun, not TOO dangerous.
Now take those same darts and show the kid how to load a firecracker behind it and plug the back end.
Turns into a whole new level of "fun"

You can disagree all you want, but read the context of the conversation you pulled my quote from.. It was a reply to the 'what kipkay does is illegal and the FDA should shut him down' post. What kipkay does in the FDA's eyes is no more illegal than what we do. And if regulation is ever enacted that affects laser components.. it will effect us just as much as kipkay. My statement had nothing to do with preaching safety.
