Dumb things you’ve done as a kid.

Ok, I made this so we could just post stupid accidents or anything we’ve done as little children.
So a long time ago I used to like chemistry (still do) especially with growing crystals (the legal kind).
I would mess around with sodium tetraborate, potassium aluminum sulfate, copper sulfate, and my favorite, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate.
As a kid I would experiment with growing different types of crystals and how impurities could change its crystal structure.
I wanted to make a “hybrid crystal” and the two chemicals I had at the time were sodium tetraborate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate.
so, I made a saturated solution of borax and put in some leftover ADP crystals and something real bad happened. There was a big puff of steam and all I could smell was a concentrated ammonia. Basically, the borax reacted to the ADP and made the dangerous ammonia separate from the phosphate(my chem knowledge is rusty garbage). Keep in mind, this stuff was boiling and releasing all sorts of stuff into the air. And guess what, about ten minutes later after I had ventilated everything, I could still smell the ammonia for some reason, not knowing I’ve been poisoned, I continued about my day, until I started feeling sick. I ran to the toilet and threw up a lot. This happened 3 more times until it stopped. Luckily I did not get the lethal dose. Dumb as hell(But I get a pass because I was a little kid).
Now you guys can tell your stories.

Homemade concentrated Nitric Acid in middle school, made from boiling Conc. drain remover and very pure Potassium Nitrate. A Reaction got out of control with the acid and filled the garage with Nitrogen dioxide while it ate through the concrete floor. A small pea sized amount landed on my forehead as it went runaway on me ( spattering) . I quickly ran in the house and doused my head in baking soda. I'll never forget the pain of boiling hot nitric acid... luckily it didn't get in my eyes ( was wearing glasses).

That was the last time I tried nitrating that particular material.... The Garage floor had a nice little divet from the acid reacting with the concrete. Nitrogen dioxide eventually dissipated to safe levels.

Please kids... don't play with strong acids otherwise you'll end up looking like fire marshall bill.

Well wasn't a kid of such, but was still young and too curious for my own good.
Accidental inhalation of chemical grade acetic acid whilst making my own bioplastics.
Accidental inhalation of tritium gas. Had 10 vials, and now I have 9. oops
And the accidental creation of a pretty dangerous plastic substance.
Note, none of these things I actually set out to do but a still a little bit of foolish wisdom for you.

Hi,
When I was in my late teens I was testing the velocity of a new .22 cal bullet . The paper target was stapled to a CCA 6x6 post about 10 Yrds away. It hit its mark and and came back and struck me in the testicle and dropped in front of me. No pain no casualty ..
DONT DO THIS AT HOME.

I once accidentally cut around 1/3 of the way through my right hand's thenar with my racing drone's propellers when I was trying to feel how much lifting power it could output. Didn't feel much pain, it was a clean cut that (thankfully) missed any important blood vessels and whatnot

I had to be 3 or 4 when I put my hand on the hot stove burner. I don't remember much but according to my parents they each took turns staying up with me as I slept to make sure my hand was on ice. Without it I apparently would scream in pain. More of an accident than a dumb thing really

I cringe thinking of what I did as a kid.o_O This might not count as I wasn't a kid but when I was around 22. I shot the rear quarter of a 1975 Caddy Deville abandoned field with all kinds of other junk with my 12 gauge with #6 bird shot from maby 10 feet away thinking it would penetrate.
Nope not even close!! it just made wallop kind of a dent but I got hit back on the inside off left leg a tiny bit above the knee with the bird shot. I had to pick out 2 pellets with tweezers.. It hurt and stung big time but something you don't go to the hospital for. I have a nice scar to go along with with story. Like I said I was 22:whistle:

My dumbest thing as a kid has to do with lasers so would be off topic I guess.

Sorry Rich I have to ask.
Did the bullet or the testicle drop in front of you?

HiGSS,
Yes we need to be more careful when doing things like that . Once anything leaves the muzzle end there's no telling.
I was lucky , but you paid the piper...
Rich:)
