I've been a fan of British oldschool Drum n Bass and Jungle since the early 90's and now some dubstep these days. Post a track that you like! Subwoofers are a must for listening :p

Dark and Heavy dubstep with lots of good droid sounds and electronic noises. Gets good 1:00 min in...

Not Drum n bass from the oldschool days but I love this one. Might have to log in because of the suggestive cartoon girl! Almost trance like Drum n Bass. 2:09 Onwards is the best part.

Kind of a unique track I like this one...

Natasha Baxter has such a beautiful voice it just seems to melt me...

Classic Drum n Bass track with spooky recording samples of UFO sighting...

What do you guys like if you like this style of music? :D

Pretty lights and deadmau5 rock too, though deadmau5 is more electro-house :D

Look up some Mt Eden if you don't already know about it too ;)

Things, thanks I absolutely love that Mt. Eden track! My background is more drum n bass so I'm always looking for some good Dubstep recommendations! Don't know if you will like these as much but here are some absolute classic Drum n Bass tracks from the good old days in 1994. Subs required again for these.

Start this one at 1:05 if your in a hurry. :)

I love the Star Trek samples :)

4:00-5:00 is about the closest you can come to the biggest and baddest Drum n Bass out there. :p

Though normally a metal (death/black, not "heavy metal") guy I do also enjoy dubstep.

Cool, thanks Sigurthr I like that! That's what I like about Dubstep is that you find yourself "headbanging" too it almost like metal music. Its got so many influences from hip hop, drum n bass, various electronic styles, heavy metal, 80's 90's etc. so theres something for everyone.

What's the difference between "heavy" metal and death/black?

I'll add just one more for now since it's a bit different. Dubstep 1975 disco style!

It really depends on who you ask but for the more widely accepted definitions it's this:

"Heavy" metal is metal music from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Good examples of which (that I happen to like) would be Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, etc. Heavy Metal also includes 80s metal or so called "hair metal" as well though (which I don't like for the most part) such as Poison, Kiss, Motley Crue, Ratt, etc. Heavy metal is very wide ranging in instrumental style and is hard to classify. The only consistent point is that volcals are always clean natural voices, and the guitar sound is not heavily overdriven (distorted) and rarely leaves the classic 6 string EADGBE tuning range.

Death metal is metal music which is based on a more rhythmic platform with heavily overdriven guitars and distorted voice that favors low pitched and high pitched sounds with reduced mids (much the same soundscape equilizationally as Dubstep). It features a strong driving beat with loud and very fast drums. Comparing other forms of metal to Death metal, their drumwork looks/sounds very lazy and/or simple. Typical tuning ranges go as much as one octave lower than normal. The overall sound retains high fidelty and clean, crisp-ness of instruments is desired, even when the tone of the instrument is heavily modified, a clarity of separation is always desired. The distorted vocals are often correctly described as growls or coarse singing/yelling and come in many variants, it isn't all "cookie monster" growls. It is often incorrectly described as "screaming" but this is a misnomer; screaming is prevalent in punk/thrash/screamo, etc. Good examples are the bands: (late) Behemoth, (late) Dimmu Borgir, Death, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal, Origin, Oceano, Meshuggah, Gojira, Kataklysm, Morbid Angel, Necrophagist, Nile, Mercyful Fate, Obscura, etc. Characteristic sound is intense bass sounds, strong rhythmic drive, loud complex drums, and low pitched growling vocals.

Black Metal is a mixture of thrash/speed and Doom/Gothic metal; meaning it involves fast guitarwork, fast but not very loud drums, and a favoring of high pitched sounds, often (but not always) with an intentionally low fidelity sound. The vocals are distorted like in death metal but often much more rich in high pitch than in mid or lows. Banshee whails and melodic screams are prevalent. There is a heightened prevalence of melody over rhythm with Black metal. Good examples are: Cradle of Filth, (early) Behemoth, Belphegor, Satan's Host, Venom, (early) Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon, etc. The trademark sound would be the fast tremolo picking guitars with a "hissy" sound and combination of high pitched whails and raspy "hissy" vocals.

There's a lot of bands which are a mix of the two genres: Blackened Death metal.

Also, there are two main variants of each of the two above main genres: Symphonic and Melodic. Examples: Symphonic Black Metal or Melodic Death Metal or Symphonic Blackened Death Metal (modern Dimmu Borgir comes to mind). These are just variations in the soundscape where either a symphonic orchestra is added to the mix (not just highlights, but actually part of it) or a strong melody is laid over the strong rhythm.

Update: I was given the go-ahead to post examples, Enjoy!

Examples:

Death Metal: (Extreme Technical Death Metal)

Black Metal: (Melodic Black Metal)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmFXjUmuT3M

"Heavy" Metal; Two variants*
(I'm picking what I consider to be the best of later heavy metal that isn't tinged with hybridization (ex; Metallica and Slayer were Thrash), since it is such a wide imprecise genre)

and one bonus: Melodic Symphonic Black Metal (one of my all time favs):

That concludes your metal lesson. =)

Sigurthr, that was a fantastic explanation! Thank you for putting in all that effort to write that that was very informative. You should simply delete whats on wikipedia on this subject and put this up instead. It's textbook material. :D

I don't mind if you post a comparison set of videos on the genres that would be interesting to be able to compare them :)

I'm just going to go make dinner and do some cleaning up so I'll be back on later tonight again.

Then you should start an Electro thread! :p

I know Drum n Bass pretty well but not Electro / house etc. so show us some good Electro tracks that'd be cool. :) It seems lasers and electronic music of all genres go good together! :pop:

Can't believe this one is almost 20 years old...

Alrighty, I've updated the post with examples!

I've got a 400+ song playlist on my ipod. I like anything as chill as Mt. Eden
Deadmau5 (of course :na:)

Maybe something harder? Like some Flux or Dr. P

Maybe something even HARDER? Like some Zeds Dead, or Excision?

Perhaps some filth? Well here's some Borgore, go nuts.

Now some truly grimy as f***, make the subwoofer grow mold and your nose hairs multiply? A daily dose of Shekel and Substep Infrabass never hurt anyone ;)

Sigurthr, Thanks for the metal lesson. :) I can now impress a friend of mine who is a fan of this style with all my new knowledge on the subject!

I think I personally take to the Heavy metal genre like the Judas Priest and the RATT. I think I actually started to like this kind of music after becoming a hockey fan as they seem to play a lot of these older 80's metal tunes at the games. :p

I like the Zomboy, and I hadn't even heard the Foster the People dubstep cover. Nice.

Bloompyle: Those are some good tunes, the Borgore is pretty rough eh? :p
Datsik, Excision, and Downlink are all from a smallish city in B.C. (Kelowna) the province where I'm from. :)

I think this is my favorite zomboy tune.

And some excision and Datsik along with Bare and Liquid Stranger of Course!

IF this was a metal tune I wonder what subgenre it would be ? :)

The rougher the better, no innuendo intended.
