Dragonlasers 95mw Viper Review

Review for my new 95mw Viper (CNI) from Dragonlasers.

This is my first high quality green laser pointer I've owned. Previously I had a 30mw green laser pointer from DealExtreme but broke it after I had pot modded it. It was the switch that actually broke, the diode was actually still working, but the lens got scratched and it was just beat.

But after buying that laser from DX, I was very impressed with green lasers. So that's why I decided to step it up and get a quality pen.

The pros:
The laser is extremely bright and powerful. You can't even look at the dot for too long because it is just painful.

It does light matches, pop balloons, burn things, etc pretty easily. I think that's pretty neat but that's not why I bought it. Still very impressive though.

The beam is visible in a lit room.

The beam is very very visable at night time and goes completely out of sight. I have no idea how far the beam actually goes but it has to be well over 5 miles.

The beam is also nice and tight (great divergance).

The build quality is excellent. It's got a nice black finish with gold caps/trim and a gold clip. It looks very professional and the cap on the front comes off so you can clean the lens with air or a lens brush.

The back cap for the batteries threads into the laser nicely, unlike the DX style pens that squeak when you unscrew them.

The button has a nice rubber pad and works very well.

The cost was reasonable. $218 and change including shipping. This laser is well worth it.

The cons:

Not DL's faut, but waiting for such an awsome toy to get delivered was agonizing. The USPS is terrible, this isn't my first bad experience with them, they take forever to deliver and they are also lousy at updating their tracking info. I ordered the laser on 1/5/10 and it was delivered 1/23/10.

It didn't come with a carry case like I thought it would, but I can live with that. All I really care about is the laser itself.

Oh and it also eats batteries like no tomorrow, but that's to be expected... its 95mw.

Overall:
I am very satisfied with this laser and I am glad I purchased from DL. Their support was excellent. If I emailed them a question they responded quickly and were really helpful. Infact when I was trying to order the laser I was having an issue with my computer accessing the pay site. I sent DL an email about the problem with my cell phone number. Within an hour I got a phone call from Frank and he solved the problem for me. I was really impressed considering he is out of Australia and I'm in the US!!

Word of advice to others: Avoid the USPS at ALL COSTS if you can.

Enjoy the pictures attached, please take note that I used a crappy phone camera and that these pics don't do justice to how bright the laser is and how visible the beam is either.

$218 and change, including shipping, US Dollars.

Yes it's a good burner, lights red matches real fast, pops balloons, burns dark colored things, hurts like a bastard if you point it at your hand, etc.

Awsome laser...

Dragon Lasers are always top notch quality... and price also but hell, how much you pay, that much you get!

I am glad you got one hell of a laser, usually nothing less than 100 mW of green in best case will light a match without external optics. Nice catch!

hey cool pics! enjoy your laser! FYI i use energizer ultimate lithium in my viper 125mW and they last forever(almost literally!) watch out burning things is a good way to catch spectral reflections(excess laser rays reflected back to your eyes), have fun and be safe!

I have the 75mw viper, it's great! Their prices are a little high, their less than wicked, but you get what you pay for definitely as eudaimonium said!

It's not confirmed, but one of the main reason that DL is more expensive than buying the "same thing" direct from CNI, is that DL actually pays slightly more (or they have some kind of a deal worked out) so CNI gives them the "better" models, with better beam specs and better diodes. In other words, DL gives you a better chance of getting an overpowered diode or having a really good beam divergence. Once again it's not for sure, but I remember hearing about this a while ago and it seems to make sense

I have commented on the forums several times about my OLD DL95 which I got about 3 years ago ---- I was impressed that it put out over 95 mW and I've carried it in my pocket every day since. It always works to impress observers .

Now I see that my wonderful toy is getting "limp" with age -- It no longer stays at a "hard" 95 mW output. Too bad Viagra is Blue .......... It now averages about 78 mW but still burns some stuff even with new e2 cells.

DL informs me that like me, green lasers age and loose performance even at a couple minutes a week of usage. The diodes and crystals age and become soft apparantly :cryyy:.

Enjoy your green lasers while they are young

my viper 125mW puts out cont. around 150mW and peaked at 180mW, my favorite laser by far.
