Dorcy Jr. Diy RED ... Please help!!!

So im guessing that because the drive boosts the voltage to 5 volts that causes the current to increase extremley high for a split second. So even though there are capacitors on the driver the increase of voltage slips by because you cant maintain the same current while increasing voltage, they move together.

Tone, you don't have to use a capacitor because the Dorcy driver already has one, (or two, I don't remember) ;D

I really need to reread the dorcy thread since I've forgotten a whole bunch of stuff. :-[

Hey you remembered the best part, no need to install a bulky capacitor! lol ;D
 
NO...I have never droped my lasers (knock on wood). Man!... this sux! oh well. ill have a couple more in a few weeks. what can we do to stop the spikes?? Thanks
 
The spikes only happen if you connect the diode straight up to the dorcy (according to what I just read) as long as you use a resistor (and you're going to need to anyway) you'll be fine.

Your resistor should stop the spikes easily. I think as chido said, it was just time and you had no control of that. Just out of curiosity, were you using rechargeables or primaries. If they were primaries, what kind of battery life are you getting?

edit:actually i remembered rechargeable lithium batteries would blow the diode because of how high the voltage is, im really just interested in what kind of battery life you get with this mod. My diodes are on the way so i will be embarking on this soon. 8-)
 
dude... thats probably what it was!! damn it. i was using the rechargeables from DX. they probably had to much of a charge. u think?
On the primaries i used, I would get a few days out of them. Very expensive, so i turned to DX.
Do you guys think it might hve been one of the bad diodes from stonetek? i built it a month ago. Thanks.
 
lol right as i edited my post. If you used 3.7 volt rechargeables then that was definitely it. Something didn't add up with "burns like hell" when your using a 10 ohm resistor

Edit: actually it might not have been the rechargeables. Through my calculations with primaries thats a voltage difference of 1.2v so 1.2v/6ohms=200ma
With rechargeables fresh of the charger they run at 4.2 volts as opposed to 3.3 volts for primaries, so an increase in .9volts. so... 2.1v/10ohms= 210ma so you were in the safe zone, but when i talked to kenom about it he said that i absolutely could not use rechargeable cr123 batteries so im stumped.

LOL!! ;D I feel like a dumb ass. When i checked them they read like 3.6v. i just checked the batt i was using when i died and it reads 3.4 still. OMG!! so is it a "no go" on the rechargeables on this mod?? so u think i fried the resistor too?

I would stick to primaries or rechargeable 3 volts like these http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4419 Im not sure if you fried your resistor but i would replace it. The way i see it, resistors are cheap insurance for diodes, just like oil is for motors so it makes no sense to risk it.
 
The only other thing that i could think of is if it was properly cooled, did you have a heat sink?
 
nope. no heat sink:( i dont have anything to make one. i dont wanna spend 20 bucks on a piece of aluminum either. does any one know of a good ghetto heat sink??
 
I tried to minimize heat by having a duty cycle.. but shouldnt the aixis modual have enough??

Probably, i read somewhere that you can find a locking collar that fits over the aixiz module loosely and could be secured with thermal epoxy. But with these new diodes it doesn't sound like you need a heat sink as hemlock mike tested one of them in nothing but an aixiz module at 400ma for 4 hours continuously! So heat might have been the killer on this one, but you won't need to worry about that if your ordering from SenKat. Oh and i found some other batteries on dx that claim to be 100% compatible with primaries. They claim to have a peak voltage of 3.6 and then rest at 3.2 which is perfect. So you could just use them up a bit until they drop to 3.2v The only down side is the low capacity, anyways here they are http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1880
 
Great! ill get 'em. is there a rcomended charger on there anywhere?? also the ghetto heatsink! anyone have any ideas??
