Do violet lasers realease IR?

I am planning on purchasing a simple 5mW Violet Laser from DealsExtreme. My parents are very paranoid about IR. So will the laser release IR or not?
 





Violet lasers do not give off IR radiation.

Only DPSS type lasers do (532 nm, 473 nm, 589 nm, 594 nm), and even then, it can be prevented by using an IR filter.

The lasers that have no chance of giving off IR are 405nm, 445/450nm, 488nm (argon), 510-525nm (will be out sooner or later), 543nm (green Helium-neon laser), 635nm, 640nm, 650nm, 660nm, and 685nm because these are diode lasers.

DPSS lasers, as stated by Le Quack, use a process that converts IR->visible.
 
Actually some violet/UV lasers are DPSS, and NOT all DPSS lasers are optically pumped with IR! For example you can use 694 nm (red) from a Ruby laser to pump a KDP crystal to produce 347 nm (UV).

Anyway, if your laser is one of those 405 nm diode lasers, no worries about IR.
 
uv light is more dangerous than ir :) they cause some optical and medical problems(in some cases skin cancer)

Depends on the IR and UV and the power levels. Not fun getting burned by longwave heat-IR. Also longwave UVA (e.g. black lights) isn't that dangerous if you keep the exposure times reasonable.
 
Even not shooting IR this pens can still be dangerous. Most of them are overspec and may reach 50-80mW.

1 minute sun exposure = 10^6 DNA damages

Normal humans (exept for xeroderma pigmentosum or cockaynes) can handle very well acute UVA/UVB exposure (lasers have only UVA that's the risky one), there's barely no risk of getting a skin cancer while ocasionally hitting your skin with a laser.

to answer his OP, you guys are correct. But to be 100% correct. not only dpss lasers give off ir. there are 808nm diode lasers that are very common.

Isn't that pretty much the same thing... you just aren't sticking a couple crystals in the way of the beam first.

Granted I guess to clarify for someone inexperienced in lasers then yes.

It's not the same thing to somebody that doesnt know what wavelengths are what color. I feel giving a complete answer is always the best.

No, 405nm lasers do not emit ir.. BUTTTTTTTT they are usually 50-100mw instead of 5 :eek:
 
It's important to warn the guy that even not emiting IR it's probably overspec and dangerous, he must use safety glasses.
