Don't have the money for them... I will do eventually but I found a cheap usb dmx controller on ebay that I will play about with.
 
Does the kit even HAVE dmx?
If it does, but no plug, it's just a simple matter of soldering a couple connectors to a 3 pin XLR socket. Simple stuff.

It has DMX yes, there are a few spare plugs on the dsp but I cant find the manual for this kit on laser show parts now...
 
I don't know if this is anything like your board, I downloaded it from the CDS site before they updated it. the plug marked DMX512 is the one you want and it will be an input....... has this kit got the row of dip switches for setting the address?

Thats a different board but its similar.

I do have the dmx switches, yes.
 
Just go down to your local electronics shop, pick up a regular XLR socket (if they dont know what that is, its just a plain microphone/audio connecter) and maybe post a pic of your board. DMX is only really 1 wire, the other 2 are ground and sheilding, so it shouldnt be to hard to find where it goes.
 
Oh, and as for he input/output, do you plan on running any other DMX scanners/lights etc at the same time? If not, then you dont need a output.
 
DOH sorry for the 3rd post. All i need is a pic of the board with the LED screen wired to it, the one with the big IC's.
 
Yeah that'd be nice. And things, no serial communications form uses only 1 wire.
Some investigations reveal that it is not as simple as data, ground and shield. I thought so.
There is a Data +, Data - and ground.
5 pin systems can carry Data 1 + Data 1 - and Data 2 + and -. so you can have 1024 DMX devices on one cable, but essentially two lines. But 90% of the time, only 3 pins are used, though a 5 pin connector is a required part of the standard.
By the way, for the output you can simply get the opposite gender connector and wire the pins straight through. So the input goes to the board and the output, both directly from the back of the plug.
 
DMX can be run through only 1 wire, thats how they keep big multicore cables small enough to be setup without the use of machinery, essentially all you need is data +. Data - is pretty much ground in DMX systems.
 
Ok your both missing this. Simply, its just Positive (+) on one pin, Negative (-) on another pin, and Ground on the last pin. That equals three pins that go to three small wires (one for each pin), that are combined into one cable. :)
